Does anyone here think that the LeftOver Bowl on Sunday Night will have anything to do with the Real National Championship?

Just Asking. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Can you say: "Time for a playoff system?"

USC should have played LSU in the Sugar Bowl for the "championship". As it stands now, if the Sooners totally destroy the Bayou Bengals, they are the (tainted) national champs. If the Tigers win, they share the championship with the Trojans. RS

I can live with a split national championship. Besides we'll have the trophy. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Sure we need a playoff system instead of the coin flip we got now. NCAA division 1 is the only sport I can think of where the champion is voted instead of decided on the field of play.

Saw an interview with Stopes last night. He was saying no play off. His major point was (may not be accurate quote but close ) You can't ask these kids to keep playing game after game.

Well heck, maybe they aren't as good as the pro's who do that but aren't div 1 players supposed to be better than 1AA players or div 2 players who do just that. Heck even highschool foot ball players decide state champs by playoff.

Maybe it is the bowl money that keeps a playoff system out of the mix.

I'll vote for no playoffs in college ball. Why do we need a national champion? I'd go back to the conferences and bowls alone, with no pretense of a proven champion, just the speculation system we have now. In fact, I'd get rid of the natiional champion trophy and just let each poll of coaches, writers, etc. stand alone. Who coulda beat who gives us something to chew on all winter. I really enjoy college football, but am ready to be done with it by New Year's. Pro ball goes too much of the year for me.

Any fair playoff system would go on for several weeks to give every conference, etc. a shot. Picking two or four teams etc. to go into the "championship playoffs" is just more of the fiction we now have. Who picks? How? There's no way to be sure without playing it out on the field, and this fan would rather leave it. And for young guys who are not getting paid but taking some pro kind of hits, a few more games per year would really take a physical toll. Let's play at least one level of ball for fun, argue over who was best and let the best players go on to do it as a job, for pay in line with the physical toll.

If they can have March Madness they can have December Madness, then the Championship game on the second week of January.
Politcs and huge money keep us for having a true national champion.

USC convincingly beat an overrated Michigan squad(significantly tougher than the PAC 10 weanies they usually play), which doesn't prove much of anything about how they'd do against Oklahoma or LSU.

Oklahoma should be #3, LSU #2, and USC #1.

It doesn't matter - my beloved "Johnnies" (St. John's University) beat the crap out of Mount Union College for the DIII National Championship.

DIII has a traditional playoff system and no scholarships - the boys play because they love it.

Along the way, SJU head coach John Gagliardi became the winningest coach in college football history.

They all had one loss, all had decent schedules but based on the opponents they lost to KSU, Florida and California, I'd keep it Oklahoma, LSU and USC in that order. Problem is any one of the teams could be left out and it would be a problem. I'd like to see a top 4 playoff #1 vs. #3, #2 vs. #4.

I only watched two OU games, K State and LSU. OU looked like an average team in both, certainly not an elite team by any stretch. I think they and there opponents were all overrated by the people who pretend ot know.

Mickey--just got in from the Sugar Bowl--I think maybe the reason OU's offense didn't look too sparkling was that they were playing the best scoring defense in Division I, by a team that plays in a real football conference. KSU is also not a slouch team--now tell me who USC played, and who they lost to. Of course, the only way to settle the issue would be for USC to play the Tigers--and on a neutral field either team could win it, if they played ten times it might be 5 and 5. But you play in the BCS, you accept their rules and definitions. By those rules, there's only one national champion, and it ain't USC <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />

Congratulations to LUS on winning the championship. Heck, I still remember Billy Cannon and the Chinese bandits. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> I still think we need a true play off system in Div I just like the other divisions have. I don't think one would be that hard to devise.

OTOH The NCAA came up with the BCS championship formula. Is USC a member of the NCAA, yeah they are. Did they sign off on the system? Yeah they did. Is the BCS the best system? Not by a long shot but every body accepted it. Soooooo USC quityurbitchin. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" />
