I guess due to the fact that we all like some entertainment on this site, and hunting season is still off aways, some of these threads border on pure fun. I propose a new thread: Would you hunt elk with around in the chamber and blue tape over the muzzle using a .223 that you propose to shoulder shoot the elk with right after an evil rancher kicked you off his land as you were riding your ATV, becasue he was mad that the elk gave his cows brucellosis?

I think I would, provided I could use the 223 AI ! Other cartridges just won't cut it.

This thread is ridiculous.
How can you even begin to answer that question if you don't know what kind of bullet you are using and whether you've have real world experience with it's failures . . . .

But what weight bullet? In what barrel twist? And...is that a regular TSX or a Tipped TSX? Come on, you can't expect us to respond adequately without basic information...

If there is any proof of a man in a hunt it is not whether he killed a deer or elk but how he hunted it.

Here's the deal . . .
Model 7 action, blued steel.
PacNor 1-in-7 twist, 223 AI number 2 countour.
Winchester Hulls.
70 grain tipped TSX.
H-335 Powder.
McMillan Pink, green, and yellow camo, classic pattern.
Leupold 3.5-10x40 Matte in talleys.
On the hunt, I was riding in my crummy, on (what I thought was) public land.
Shooting Otters (the legal kind--any fool can tell the diff).
I come across a stupid rancher who gets PO'd that I am on his land--He is wrong, I know my GPS tells me so.
So I sneak back onto the PUBLIC land shoot an Elk.
I determine from the post mortem (that I perform barelegged with a swetshirt on) that the animal has B-Cell-osis.
I call upon the rancher, out of the goodness of my heart--to let him know--hic public land cows could be at risk.
The dude freaks out starts yellin that I gotta leave his dumb place, and acts all weird about my bare legs.
Then . . .
And this is the wierd part . ..
He throws a bottle at me--not just any bottle--a crown royal bottle.
This gets me more PO'd and I shoot the bottle with my 257 Roy from 700 yards, so he calls the cops.
I tell the cops that I shot from 700 yards and that I never miss at such close range, the guy was safe.
Long story short, the cops go the ER and I spend the night in jail cuz Big Mama won't make my bail this time.
So now I gotta leave and move to Corpus Christi . . .
Some people ? !?!?!?

Do I have a fixed or variable Tasco scope? Turrets or mil dots? And whatever setting should I hunt at? The scope power changes the point of impact you know.
Shall I carry my .45 or .454 Casull (front sight blade previously filed off from prior owner...a witty Alaskan) in case a bear charges me as I'm butchering (bone/no bone...gut/no gut) my small cow who will taste better than an old cow.
The devil's in the details man.

How can you even begin to answer that question if you don't know what kind of bullet you are using and whether you've have real world experience with it's failures . . . . You need a Hornady V-max for a flat trajectory. It'll open too fast on large game, so put a little dab of JBWeld on it to keep it closed.

Read an article recently on whitetail deer vision...belive it was Field & Stream. I figure deer vision and elk vision might be similar so I thought I would second the opinion above to go with another color of tape on the barrel.
The article suggest on apparent studies that the cones in the eye's of whitetail allow them to distinguish the color blue and shades of blue very well. The author went on to right that guys who wear a camo shirt or jacket and blue jeans really have it all wrong, and would be better off to wear full blaze orange as opposed to anything blue.
Maybe going with blaze orange tape over the muzzle might be an option.
