Given that Savage has gone from near broke and out of business to selling a ton of models and having a real loyal following, here's the million dollar question..

Would you buy a re-introduced Model 99?
Lets say a 99-A straight grip saddle gun chambered in one of the classics like 250-3000 or .358 or .300 Savage or even .338 Federal.

I'm bolt gun to the core but thats one that I dont know if I could pass up.

What say ye all?

It is difficult to imagine that a new edition would show the same qualities as some of the nicer early ones. I would be inclined to track down a used rifle, were I to get the bug.
I do like the 300 Savage.....

I don't know if it would have a straight grip, as the pistol grip seems to be more popular. And I doubt that they would have the rotary magazine again. But truthfully, I wouldn't care. As long as it was priced within reason (on par with other hunting rifles), I would probably buy several. I like them. A whole lot. And if I could get one in .358, so much the better. But I could live with .300 Savage. Heck, that is already what I hunt with...

Depends on what it costs and the specific caliber. Of those you list I think only .358 would tempt me much. I'm sure this is totally illogical, but if .22 high power were on the list, I might lose all control ...

I would definitely buy one.

I'm looking for one of the mid-90's reissues -- anyone know where I can find one of them?

It would have to have the rotary magazine, be available in .358 Winchester with a straight grip, and also a Featherweight rifle version in .250-3000.

I already have my .300 Savage.

....Problem is that selling the old Savage design at a cost that will attract sufficient buyers might be quite a chore, given the difficulty of manufacturing such a design....Savage attempted to overcome the high cost of manufacture that was drying up sales, by dropping the rotary mag for a clip fed model. It didn't suit folks who revere the beauty of the original design, as is!...

....Maybe the 99 could be reproduced today with CNC equipment for a high grade special order niche. A spot in the market designed for limited sales to 'high end' buyers, but I've serious doubts about a model to attract volume sales...Even the special order reproduction would be a MAJOR MONEY gamble! Still we who love the old Savage can continue dreaming!

No. I like the magazine, but not much else.

I think they would have to go to investment casting in order to build new ones. I think they tried this in the early 80s by having them investment cast in Spain but it did not work out. IMO, they should let Ruger's Pine Tree Castings make the receiver, lever, etc., and then dress them up. In reality, I don't think it would catch on because most people are not like us nor do they appreciate the finer things in life. Thanks...Bill.

I don't think winchester or marlin is setting the world on fire with lever gun sales. I don't think there is much interest in the 250-3000's and 300 savage type rounds either, we gun nuts like weird stuff like that however the masses want ultra mags, mags, shorts mags and of course the 30-06 and 270 as well. the finwolf and winchester 88 are long gone, there just isn't any interest in lever guns, how many guys are hunting with BLR's these days either

I would if I could find one at a reasonable price... The problem is the BLR's have priced themselves out of the basic hunting rifle market. I can get a Remington AND a Stevens And some ammo for what a BLR costs here in California.

The 99 was an interesting step in rifle evolution.

I wouldn't buy one. They didn't appeal to me when they were making them and they haven't gotten any better looking over the years.

I would not buy one unless they were giving them away and I could throw it behind the seat as a truck gun. I realize that many people think they are the bees-knees but to me they are very homely and rather archaic. Like was said before they were an interesting step in rifle evalution but that time has passed.

If you like them that's great but they just aren't for me. And in honesty I don't think that they would sell for squat. A couple of the old timers and guys who like to collect them would be in line to get one right away but the sales would dry up real fast IMHO.

If they were only available in .243, .308, .300 Sav; Then emphatically: NO!

If they were available in .250, .260, 7mm-08, .358, .338 Fed, or .35 Rem, Then they might convince me to cut loose the $.

Problem is, that most afictionados that want them, already have them. I can't see it as a money-making venture... Sorry guys!
