I am thinking about getting a GPS. I would be using it mainly in my truck but would want to be able to take it with me out of the vehicle. I am looking for advice on what to look for or suggestions on what to avoid.

I recently purchased a Magellan Crossover that as the name says, does exactly what you are looking for. This is a very easy to use GPS and probably tells as much as any other. I got it at WalMart for a close out price of 200.00, originally priced at 499.00. I am well pleased and would suggest that you take a look at one.

Dave,

After you master the compass and topo maps, you can augment that knowledge with a Garmin. Good value for the money, but won't replace good navagation skills and common sense, and don't try to replace mapping skills with gadgets.

This is the one I use. I am very happy with it for use on USFS trails or back country roads.

If you are intending to use the GPS for any off road purposes, I would check out the package on the right side of the linked page. "Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx GPS+ Topo Pkg."

And the price has come down about $150 since I got mine a couple years ago.

If you intend to use the unit to navigate on city streets and major highways, you will want to look at some software other than "TOPO" from Garmin. TOPO is great on the trail or backroads, but is about worthless on city streets.
