Went out today and sighted the Ruger 10/22 in. Was running out of time but heres where I got it at 40 yds. Heres the gun. Found some of the bullets in the backstop. Do you think they will kill a squirrel? Oh yeah, its a .17HM2

i'd say that rifle is tuned in for tree rats. the two .17's were popular around here for a couple years, but most folks i know went back to a .22 due to meat damage (if the shooter hit em' in the torso). if you are a head shooter, that gun/caliber will do a great job. good hunting.

Yep I'm a head shooter, actually I aim for the eye that way if I miss by a little I will still get it in the head. I have never killed a squirrel with the .17 yet but many with the .22 so we will see what kind of splatter result I get......maybe I will post some pics.

They sure didn't bust apart like V-maxes should....... at least IMHO.....
One of those through the head, though, and expansion won't be necessary.
Still.......

VA, I'm thinking that because they were shot through a 3/4" piece of plywood then hit a dirt backstop is why they are looking like that, as a matter of fact I found alot of those plastic tips laying behind the plywood targets on the ground as if they seperated from being driven into the plywood. I'm sure they would perform differently on game but like you said if hit in the head expansion wouldnt be necessary. As a side not I was getting 1956fps velocity avg.

Every V-max I've ever fired (albeit from .22 centerfires or larger) just disintegrated when impacting something relatively solid..... and plywood would count.
Head shots only, as I don't think I can like the bullet performance there (too slow, perhaps?).

Hmm possibly, my avg velo was 1956fps. Next chance I get I'm going to shoot em through something different such as a water jug or wet phonebook....see what they look like then.

We'll see what happens, I'm going out tomorrow with a friend. We will be hunting on a military refuge near a lake, so when the squirrel hunting gets slow we will go fishing, then back to hunting if we need to. I will have my camera.
