I use low hikers most of the time. I look for ones with a stiff midsole by taking the shoe and flexing it from the toe. The only problem I encountered is lack of water proofness. I typically use hiking poles when just backpacking so don't stumble often. If its rainy or snowy, then I prefer a 6" boot.

Other than ski boots and something like Rick posted high vs. low really has little affect on ankle roll over according to some who have tracked such things. Best thing is to have a fast collapse reflex when you start to roll an ankle. YMMV.

Thanks for all the other thoughts and experience gents... this is a good conversation. For me I'll stick with boots. They're what I know and trust and what have worked for me. Two weeks later my wife's ankle is still sore and wrapped... until she started with low hikers she never had an issue and she does have darn skinny ankles.

We'll see... Rick B's suggestion is worthy of a look IMO.

BTW, ditched the hike this weekend as the weather turned... and I'm beat laugh

We canned a camping trip as well Brad. I don't mind though. Just took the pooch for a walk and damn that cool weather feels nice.

Perfect morning to go for one last shoot before hunting season.

It is finally cooling off around here as well, in the mid to high 50's this morning and it feels great!

I am going to go Mule deer scouting tomorrow, weather permitting!

I've still got a 300 WSM sitting here that needs to be bedded, scoped and loaded for... I'm feeling pretty lazy lately!

Supposed to get snow (maybe) in the high country tonight... typical Montana, eh? 90* one day and a forty five degree shift the next...

Maygan didn't find the brand new('waterproof') work PTT phone in my pants yesterday so it took a ride in the washer. Still works fine!

After walking a whole lot over rough, steep country the past 10 days I'm sold on higher boots (10" vs. 8")! Might not be needed, but it kept this porker from turning an ankle...
