Not sure I'm right but it seems to me I read somewhere many years ago that there was a small run of guns that got out with 6mm magnum on the barrels. A decision was made to change the name but I think a few had the word "magnum" x'd out but they got into the publics hands any way. It might have been something written by Jim Carmichel of Outdoor Life
Lets see what others remember. Is my recall faulty or am I still good for a few more years?

Jim is right. When Remington first produced the 6mm's in the 700 in 1963 with a 1-9 twist,they considered a variety of names in making the change from the 244 Remington designation. The first 244's in the Model 722's had a 1-12 twist that was later changed to a 1-10 twist. Both were too slow to stablize the longer and heaver 6mm bullets. The name 6mm Rem Mag, among others, was considered and somehow several hundred of the rifles were produced with that designation. Remington had decided not to use that designation and when it was discovered, they just XXX'ed out the Mag and let them go out of the factory.

So it had nothing to do with the 6mm Rem Mag at that time because that wasn't introduced until 1966. Thanks

Possibly you meant the 6.5 Remington Mag?

The 6mm Remington Magnum with the Xed out MAG is worth a pretty penny.

It is simply the regular 6mm Remington now. IMO, if they had kept the "magnum" moniker, we'd all be buying 6mm Remington Magnum ammo down at Wally World instead of the 243 Winchester. Anyway, what's in a name...

just an aside but I thought the 6mm Rem twists were 1 in 9" and the 243's are 1 in 10" .....anybody??

Kenjs1, yes. The X'ed over mags used to show up fairly regularly in this part of the country, but I haven't shopped for boltguns in a long time.

According to John Lacy's book, IIRC, they were all made in Feb/Mar/Apr of 1963. There is a picture of a Remington inter-department memo about the 6mm Rem Mag with the "Mag" X'd out in Lacy's book. IIRC, Lacy indicated that maybe 500+/- might have left the factory stamped this way. What is the assembly code on the barrel, on the left side just forward from the front of the receiver?

L = Feb, A = Mar, C = Apr, K = 1963

I have 1, a 700 ADL 20" barrel, SN 579xx, which I "think" has an "AK" assembly date code, but it is buried in the safe and I'm not planning to dig it out anytime soon.

The 3 or 4 that I have seen have all been 20" 700 ADLs.

My 700 ADL was one of two in stock at a Maine store when I bought it in Oct of 1964. It had '6mm Remington' on the bbl. The other had the x'd-over 'magnum' stamp. I choose the 'wrong' one, because the stock looked nicer!! Oh well. My serial is 85xxx, BTW. 20" bbl, one in nine twist. Still shoots like a house afire. My son's gun now.
Still wears the 2-7x Redfield I put on it back then. Paid $90 for the rifle and (in fear and trembling, since I'd never owned a scope before) $116 for the scope and mount. Not the last time I've paid more for glass than for steel...
Final note: my pal, seeing how well mine shot, went back and bought the x'd rifle. Claimed it never shot as well as mine, and traded it away pretty quickly. I've never regretted the choice I made, as my 'non-magnum' rifle has been MOST satisfactory.

I pulled mine out of the safe, "LK" assembly code, so 02/63.

I bought mine for $400, along with another 700 ADL 20" in 222, but the 222 was really early production, SN 3333. I should have kept that 1!
