Anybody got a feel for the price of one in 95% or so condition? No idea of how old but it is not drill and tapped in front, only the rear with a Lyman pop up peep. Owner is asking $750

The serial range would help put a date and may be a model to it. Are you saying that it is a Model 250-3000 or that it is a caliber .250-3000? All the TD's are pre-WWII and none are standard D&T'ed for a scope. All had the two holes in the tang.

my 1930 vintage is 90+%, except it has been d&t'd and had swivels added. metal is still a very nice blue, checkering isn't rounded, all in all a sweet huntin' gun. i paid 525 and figure i over paid a tad.

about 18 months ago i bought a m1899 250-3000 born in 1918 or 1919. it's condition is 90% overall. 95% on barrel finish, 85% on receiver finish ( thinner on belly ) and 90% or better on wood. proper sights, much color on lever, nothing missing or nothing added. ser. #2008xx. real nice rifle that i paid $785.00 for. seemed fair to me.

I don't know enough about it to ask the right question. I know it is a Mod 99 in 250-3000. A takedown with a lyman pop peep screwed into the rear tang. It has a flat filler where the rear sight should go.

Overall action and barrel are about 95% blue and stock is better. I do not know the serial number as I saw it at a Gunshow. Asking $75 I offered $650. He seems to want $750.

I am just wondering if I blew it or not.

was this at the Puyallup show? do you know where the seller was from?

I recently paid what would amount to just over $300 U.S. for a 250-3000 TD deluxe built in 1916. Definitely not in 90% range condition wise, and not really a "collector"...pinned forestock repair, minor pitting on one side of the receiver...but the bore looks OK, and the gun appears to be in good condition, and very serviceable otherwise. I am looking forward to using it. I would LIKE one in collectible condition, but doubt that I will ever run across one at a price I can justify paying. The "Savage Hounds" on this board are all far more knowledgeable than I am on this, but my guess is that if the gun is really as clean as you say, then $750, though maybe not a bargain, is probably a fair price.

I was recently offered a 250-3000 rifle. It was 85% blue with excellent wood, TD very tight, Lyman tang sight, no rear sight, bore below average.... asking $850 Canadian. Owner still has it!

The first rifles made in .250-3000 were in the "model" called the .250-3000. The early rifles, till around serial 193xxx, had a checkered trigger and most had a perch-belly stock. These rifles should be worth more than the later TD's that were in "caliber" .250-3000.

Ya he's a good guy, he lined me up with a 38-55 and a 32-40 just this month alone, I told him to just keep them coming, and now he has a line on a 1895, hopefully it'll be mine soon as well. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />

nah Mick, i seldom drive over thataway, for any reason, i like the peacefulnes of the penninsula! i ask because the guy i bought mine from has mentioned selling more of his there. he claims to have a 99% .284! fwiw, there's a show in Port Angeles this weekend, don't know if he'll have a table or not.

If you're looking at 99s in Puyallup make sure you do your homework so you know what it is you're dealing with and what the going rate is. Most of the sellers with a piece or two of the earlier Savage stuff seem to think that they've got a gold mine just because its old. They don't really know Savages and equate the prices of older ones with the prices of older Winchesters. As an example, I once came across a M99G that had been D&Ted with Weaver mounts and rings and a cheap scope and with the barrel not reblued but painted black. If I remember correctly the seller wanted a touch over $700 and wouldn't budge a buck. He kept telling me "but its a pre-war takedown."
