I would please like some help in "authenticating" my Model 70 serial # 14757 30-06 bull barrel target. It has the wing safety on top of the bolt. The barrel is 24" bull marked -MODEL-70-30-06 SPFLD.- It has a Lyman 48 rear and a globe front. It has a Unertl 16x in target mounts. It has the dark walnut Marksman stock with a checkered steel butt and adjustable sling swivel mount in the forend.

What you have there is a real piece of junk, but because I am such a great guy and will be in Cal. in 2 weeks I will help a bor out and take this one off of your hands for the princely sum of $200.00

Seriously, I am not the model 70 Guru here though I own a couple. It sounds to me like you have a terrific and cool find there. If it is indeed a model 70 Target model I am thinking it to be worth lots. Like a comma in the check for starters....

That serial number dates as being made in 1938, making it a "pre-war" Model 70.

As such, it should have a "cloverleaf" rear tang, ILO a tapered tang, in addition to the top safety.

A Model 70 Target should have a 28" heavy barrel.

They are worth 150% over (250%) the value of a pre-war Model 70 Standard in like condition.

You could try for a Cody letter, the only true "authentication", to verify in what config/when that serial number left the factory. I don't know if that service is available for the Model 70.

Yeah, that's the best offer so far LOL! It has the cloverleaf tang. I checked Madis and none of the barrel stamps he lists are 30-06-SPFLD. like this one. Only 30-06 SPRG., or 30 GOVT '06. ?? Madis lists the Winchester address stamp as below s/n 65000. Blue Book says pre 1951 target could be ordered in any caliber and 24" med barrel. Could be special order or a re-barrel?
