Does a 270 weatherby shooting a 150 grain partition leave you any room for error? Muzzle velocity would be around 3150 fps.

I don't know if it is considered a elk gun, but mine has killed elk(S, and moose, and bear, and deer, and goat, and....well you get it.
130 gr partitions and 130X for seemed to work pretty good.

The answer is Yes, the 270 Roy is an Elk gun (as is the 270 Winchester.)

My regular .270 has killed 10 bulls and 4 cows so I think you'll be just fine.

Does a 270 weatherby shooting a 150 grain partition leave you any room for error? I don't know of a cartridge that allows you room for error on elk. I have seen them hit too far back with 7 mags,300,s and 340's,etc.Sloppy hits with any of them resulted in wounded elk.Hit properly with any of them, the elk wind up dead. The notion that you could wound an elk with a 300 and be better off than if you wounded him with a 270 is pretty much a myth.
The 280 Remington is overbore.
The 7 Rem Mag is over bore.

Haven't shot anything but paper with mine, but it's the most accurate rifle in my safe. I'm still surprised by that, given it's pencil thin barrel contour. (Mine's a Japanese Mark V, from '84 with a 24" barrel). In spite of its "magnum" name, (and given its ballistics it's a name well deserved) I find the Mark V/.270 Roy very easy on the shoulder. The cartridge certainly offers flat trajectory and plenty of punch...especially with current bullet technology.

Watched my son-in law take his first elk with a 270 roy three years ago. Ammo costs about $52 or more per box. Might want to take up reloading. Other than that it's a great round.

I got a custom sako in 270 wby when i was a teen, and lord onley knows how many rounds i shot and critters succum to the gun, bein a teen and all, any leagal animal was in trouble.
I put her in the back of the closet and forgot her for alot of years, the new 30-378 got the lime light along with the whelen and various others.
in 2004 i drew a good elk tag in idaho, and for old times sake i dusted off the 270 wby. i took a huge bodied 300 class 6x6 on that hunt, he was bedded and never got up, just put his head back and rolled over. could not ask for more in a round, i was shooting a 140 gr tbbc. btw, that wasnt the first bull that that rifle had done in. elk rifle? I say yes.

With a big enough trigger guard to fit their hoof into...and a long enough length of pull I'd say yeah. You'll have to load it for him though, it's a downright biyatch with no thumbs. SD

I don't think it is a great elk cartridge but certainly more than adequate. A partition might be a little soft at those velocities- I would prefer a TSX or similar. I know there have been a lot of elk killed with 270s but my experiences with them have been poor. I have seen several bullets fail to penetrate deep enough to cause a mortal wound. I haven't had this happen with the SAME bullets out of a 30-06 which is the the same case. The WBY would only exacerbate this problem. If you are using it for a long range rifle ONLY, I would opt for the Berger VLDs and limit your shots to broadside presentation. Then you would have a very lethal combination. I would be loathe to take a Texas Heart Shot with the combination you proposed but wouldn't hesitate with a TSX should that be my only shot.

If a .270 Winchester will get the job done, why NOT a .270 Roy? Seems like an obvious answer, but maybe not in these days magnumomania... Selmer

I'm not a .270 Winchester fan for elk,but I have like the results on elk with the .270 WSM and the .270 WBY. Most elk I have seen shot and the 2 I have shot were cows and young bulls and range was 25 yds to 225 yds. The biggest was a 15 year old cow estimate 500-600 lbs on the hoof. The bullet was a 150 gr partition out of the Weatherby MK V .270 WBY,shot was broadside and throught the shoulders at 75 yds.It shattered the right shoulder and broke the far side and defflected up and out through the spine, she colapsed at the shot.
The other was a spike I shot with a Browning BLR .270 WSM 140 gr accubond,Shot was quartering to me slightly, bullet entered in front of right shoulder and out behind the 5-6 rib shot was about 25 yds,he ran maybe 30 ft and tumbled. When I ran up on him he still had his head up and was blowing blood 3 feet out on each side in the snow as he breathed.I put one in his neck wich exited into a ground making a large divot.
Most of the elk I have seen killed with the .270 mags have been 1-2 shot kills, none were severe angles or raking shots. The reason I like the 2 is the fact of pushing the 140 & 150 gr bullet faster, wich results in more ft/lbs
So to answer your ? yes it will work. BBJ

Bareback- what was it about the .270 that you didn't like about for elk, and was either of the 2 that you've shot taken with it?
Thx Dober

Mark, I've shot more than 2 elk,it was I have only shot 2 elk with the .270 caliber.I just have never like the .270 Winchester, having grown up in a 30-06 family were the 30-06 was king or jack of all trades,I just grew biased against it.I have 2 freinds who kill elk every year with .270 win,it just wasn't my cup of tea. I like the the added fps and the extra Ft/lbs the 2 (WSM & WBY) generate with the heavy to caliber bullets.
Me,myself and I prefer the bigger is better attiude.I don't use the '06 much anymore for elk since I have got that whats it called Magnumitist.I like big cases and big bullets going realy fast. Since Montana has gone to the 2-tags on elk,I get a chance to shoot a few each year.My personal favorite is the .338 Win Mag but I use a variaty of rifles.
I was just stating my reults I have had with the .270 WBY and the WSM. BBJ

Gotcha, funny thing is I too grew up in a fam of 06 users and so of course I had to swim upstream and go .270...<g>
I have used my big 7's, big 30's and 340 and 375 Wby quite a bit on elk as well. 4 me, it still comes down to where I put it and it really doesn't seem to matter to much what I use as long as the bullet is directed in a proper manner (certainly not rocket science is it).
What part of Mt are you from? If you're truly from Mid of Mt then it's got to be Lewistown...right?
Thx Dober

Acctualy the center of the state is in the Yogo Inn. I live 34 miles west of Lewistown, north of a wide spot in the road called Moccasin.
No it's not rocket science. By far alot of calibers work on elk,I've killed them with 6mm,.257 Roberts,25-06 Rem on the bottom end.A elk shot in the guts will go just as far with a .458 slug as it will with a .270.
Might get some flaq for this but, there have been a few that I had to take through the heart/lungs lenght wise(going away or hard 1/4 away shot) but that is beside the point of this thread. Good Luck BBJ
