Can't beat those CDL Whelens.
JOC was right. The 270 Winchester on a Model 70 is a great combination as is the 30/06 and 375 H&H

Burley,
That's one heck of a blaster you have there.
Your nut's if you ever break that one down.
Have you been currently shooting it?

Awesome! I got the same rifle that I bought on gunbroker a few months back. I plan on doing the same thing to mine.
Nice rifle and great shooting!

I have yet to read about a whelen that wouldn't shoot. Mine is easily the most accurate rifle I own, .5"-.75" groups all day with 225 NP's. Has anyone found one that isn't a shooter?

My .35Whelen was my number one shooter until a Tikka .270 showed up, now its a tie for first place. Far more accurate than a big rifle should be. The only bad shooting whelen I have ever seen had a very loose nut behind the trigger.
I believe Barness indicated that the bigger bullets tend to be a better overall quality when measured on the Junke[sp] machine.

I haven't heard of one that wouldn't shoot. That awful 1-16 twist and all.

Congratulations on your rifle. I have had very similar results with my 35 whelen CDL also. My really likes the 225 noslers though. I ran across 3 boxes of the 250gr hornady round nose last year for $4.00 per box/100. They have also pleased me.

Torque:
Holy crap! $4 a box of 100 250gr hornadys! Dang, you snaked a deal, I'd say. I need some of that luck.

Burleyboy, If you would, please tell us how much Re15 you loaded under those Hornady 250s to get that kind of velocity. Inquiring minds want to know. Incidentally, I regularly load my Ruger M77RS Whelen with the 250 grain Speer Hot-Cors and 59 grains of Re15. I have tested as high as 60 grains with no pressure issues. Finn Aagard reported the same finding in his great 338-06/35 Whelen article. -

That is the exact load I use in my CDL and the results are the same, right down to the velocity. I use Alliants max load of 59.5gr of RL 15. These days it's hard to find a published load that breaks 2400 with 250 grainers... stupid lawyers.

Another CDL shooter here with a 7 mag. It's a pure hunting rifle for me so after I found a good load (160 gr AB's and 64 gr of RE22), I sighted it in and now just recheck fairly quickly each fall. Last week I went out and shot 5 out of 5 at 300 yds and 3 out of 5 at 500 with the misses being very close with a touch of breeze. Good enough for my hunting purposes.

I believe I was shooting 60g of RL15, it's a bit over book but no pressure signs in my rifle. I had the bullets seated out a bit to get them closer to the lands but don't recall the COL. I have had the gun at the range 1 more time since then and shot a couple more 3 shot groups at 100 yards and both were just under 3/4".
I never really wanted a whelen because I have a M77 MKII stainless in 350 rem mag that shoots consistant 1" groups, but it looks like I'm now stuck with both. All these big game rifles and I usually fill my tags with a bow.
