Are you going short or long action? I'm thinking of almost the same exact build with a short action.

Long action all the way mliang with Norma chambering I want to seat the bullet all the way out as much as possible to get what I can/need out of this cartridge.

What exactly is the difference between the 6.5-284 Norma and the 6.5-284 Winchester?

Mostly COL. I believe, not postive, that the Norma is set to 3.3 inches and the Winchester is 2.8 inches. Same case but you have to seat the heavier bullets further into the case of the Winchester eating up powder room.

On a seperate note..
I wonder if you could put a small notch into the reciever (similiar to what's on Weatherby's ULW) and use a Wyatt extended magazine box. This should be able to get you out to 3.0 inches. Which is all the 6.5x284 should need on a hunting rifle. I don't even know if you need a notch cut or not, but 3.0 inches seems just about perfect to me. Short action but still able to seat all but the heaviest bullets out there.

If that's the only difference I guess I should get a Norma reamer...
Not dealing with a 700 here but a Sako 75 in 6.5 Swede....3.4" mag box.

That is the MAIN difference.

There might be a different shoulder angle (something similiar to a 284AI case versus a regular 284), but I'm not positive. You would defninitly need to check to make sure of.

I don't understand if going to a long action why not just go 6.5-06?

Good question.

I think for the same reason all those F Class shooters use a
long action with the 6.5x284 case.
From what I gather they believe it a more accurate hull that
does the same thing as an 06 case does while seating out those long bullets.

If one were starting with a new barrel, I agree, but I'm thinking of rechambering the Swede barrel...the 6.5-284 reamer will clean up the base of the chamber, the 6.5-06 reamer won't...a Swede is a bit bigger at the base than an '06 case.

I just compared the diagrams of the Norma to a regular 284 Winchester case and everything looked the same except the COL and neck.
