Can someone give me a quick run down or point me in the direction of where to find a chart on .223 barrels rate of twist and what grain bullets are best for them.
Thank you

1/14 up to 55gr unless you shoot in Sub zero conditions.
1/12 up to 55gr pluss 64gr powerpoint.
1/9 up to 69gr. Might handle more, might not.
1/8 up to 77gr and some 80s.
1/7 for 80s or so.
1/6.5 for 90s.

Th 9 twist will generally stabilize up to 80s if driven hard and a true 9 twist....
The 6.5 twist will shoot them down to 52 and not tear them up, though the 60 sierra has a tough time with the 6.5 twist.

Depending on what you are specifically after I always lean to more stable than less, which is not what the BR shooters do. That being said I'd be thinking for light bullets that aren't any good at distance, 10 twist would be all I'd go to, beyond that IE 55 and up basically or say 52 and up would be 7 twist. And only the 6.5 if you are shooting 80s and 90s.

I'd like to think most of my shooting will be with 45-55 bullets. Mostly hunting. Vermin and hogs.

Not mentioned much anymore, but 10 would be what I'd be looking for specifically, 9 after that for your use. I'd hate to err to the 12 or 14 and then find a need for a bit heavier bullet and not be able to stabilize it.

Most good bullets IE ones that will hold together are a bit heavy, 52-65 for starters.

I lean towards more twist being better than less, and would go 1-9, just depends on what platform you get. I just can't see any reason to use the 45's. 50 v-max is a fine pill (shoots just as well out of 1-9's as it does 1-12 or 1-14), 55 cheap sp's or fmj's, and then on up the midweight tsx for porkers.

That's exactly the information I needed. Thanks taking the time to help inform me. I'm in the process like my original post says of putting together a Ar varmint style rifle. The damn option of these are mind boggling alone. Now I might have a fellow that want to do some trading on a 6.8spc upper.
What are the opinions of you fellows on the 68 in the AR? I had one in a bolt rifle so I have some knowledge of what it's capable of. You just don't hear that much about it in the AR circles.

With 6.8 mags (they are a bit different, and not cheap last time I bought 2) they are everything your bolt gun was, in a semi auto.

Remember once you have a lower you are hooked and will buy other uppers...

My thoughts on the round.... 200 yard deer/pig type gun easy. I can stretch my 6mm wildcat off that case to 300 if I want to, but both the 6.8 and 6mm woa are easy 200 yarders.

Well then I have another question Mr.Rost. Since I am planning on building this rifle, what lowers do you recommend? I've been looking at Anvil Arms and Double Star.

Never had either, from what I hear Double Star is fine though.

I"ve only shot Colt, Armalite, RRA, CLE, STAG, and EA lowers and all were fine though the EA were cheap, but worked, although they were only 45 bucks.
