I've wanted a savage 99 for many, many years but never saw one that I really had to have. Last week I went to a local gun shop and there it was, the one I had to have. I did some research on this site and I think that this one was made in June, 1958. The lever has 6J stamped on it. A few VERY slight marks on the wood and metal and no wear on the bottom of the receiver at all. Pretty exceptional condition. I'm trying to get the original rear sight back from the previous owner. It had a new Bushnell 3x9 on it which I replaced with the mint '70's? vintage Weaver 2.5 post and crosshair. I believe that this model is a 99EG? Maybe someone can verify that. I took some pics (not too great) of my longest and shortest big game guns, the '58 Savage 99 and the 1964 Marlin Marauder. The Savage is a 308 Win and the Marlin is a .35 Rem.

Jed,
Thanks for your reply! I don't know anything about the rarity of the combo but I wanted a .308 because I have a lot of .308 supplies and no rifle. The fact that I always wanted a Savage 99 and the exceptional condition sealed the deal. I would have though that they made a bunch of .308's by then because it was always a popular caliber.

So far I've only seen 1 for sale locally and that was a while ago. Nice rifle/scope combo.

They did make 308's back in 1958 but most of them were model F's. Like Jed said, the EG's in 308 and the R's were alot harder to find. I traded off my EG in 308 but kept the R in 308.
Yours looks like a really nice gun, take good care of it.
Oh ya, whats the serial range of it? Somewhere in the mid 950XXX's?

Mad dog,
The serial is 943xxx with the lever stamp of 6J.
That EG is now a gun safe queen. It will never be hunted with as long as I own it, it's just too nice. I may find another 99 that I would use but I have enough other rifles that I can use.

XLTFX4, Where in Upstate are you? I like to know where rifles like your EG in 308 reside.

Jed,
Now if I told you that it would spoil the mystery! You wouldn't want that would you?

Yes, I did email with a fellow named Mike a while back and another Mike did contact me, yesterday, about the Marauder. I'm not ready to sell, yet, but I'll be in contact with them when the time comes!
I guess I've gotten lucky with the guns I've bought at this gun store. I didn't have a clue about the Savage 99EG- 308, though, I just wanted a 308 Savage 99. The other gun I bought there was a 1959 Ithaca Super Deluxe Deerslayer (first year) with 26" barrel in NIB condition. That is one extraordinary slug gun!
There is a link to someone that sends a "factory" letter about a 99 or Fox Sterlingworth. I was wondering what information does the letter include?

You will probably get only a ship date on your 1957/58 rifle.

Thanks Plab, I had that Weaver sitting around and I thought that it would give a classic look to the 99. With that 24" barrel it probably should have a 4 power. LOL!
I don't know which Weavers were better than others but this scope is a bit newer than the rifle. I think that the proper vintage Weaver would be a 60 B series. I have to say that over the years I've had Weavers that were very sharp and very bright so I tend to like them. Their 22 scopes were another story.

I found a .308 EG about 7 or 8 years ago, and love it! Mine came out of Spokane, WA. Serial is 964XXX, and the only thing keeping it out of the woods is that I live in a shotgun only area. It is a superb shooter with Federal premium ammo, staying around an inch at 100 for 3 shots. Paid 550 for it, which was high at the time, but I REALLY wanted it.

I'm looking forward to shooting this EG. I think I'll take it out over the next day or so.
I was a big fan of Larry Koller and must have read "Shots at Whitetails" a dozen times. He advised the EG over the F because it is heavier and thus more comfortable to shoot (less recoil). I can appreciate that as I get older!

I have a 1957 EG in 308, wears a 3x9 burris and shoots federal fusion 165gr. I belong to a camp in southern Adirondacks and hunt with it every weekend I'm up. Some of the boys shoot marlins and remmy autos but the 99 outshoots them all It is just a great woods gun DWG
