I like my AR15 the most. Fast, and light for an AR. Mine is a 6x45 with a light contour 20" PacNor tube.

My 17 Rem is up at the top too.

The 22-250 is just ideal for the listed use. . . .. .

Everything else is just guys talkin' about their favorites.

James,

Sounds like this is going to be a "walking" coyote rifle for the most part, needs to swing into action fast, but also make the long shots on occasion.
I am a fan of the 22-250 and own 2 of them, but since going over to the dark side with Stick's help, I'm quickly becoming a fan of the .223 AI and the 22-250's are staying at home more. I find the range to very close to the .22-250 with less recoil. I can't see a difference in terminal performance on coyotes yet, but it will take a couple dozen before I make a firm decision.
Surely can't complain about the accuracy and cost of components!
However, if you just have to have a little more power, as Tim the toolman would say, I would think the 22-250 is as close to ideal as you can get. No coyote is going to walk away from a direct hit midsection with one of those.
Tough decision, but I think you're up to it with a little moral support from the peanut section here! - Sheister

Sheister,

What's swaying me in this direction (among other things) is the several thousand 60gr Hornady spire points I have sitting in the shop. Found 'em blowing them out @ $30.00 per 1000.

I'm thinking this bullet will surely do a fine job on yotes and similar size vermin and still be cheap enough to practice with the same load.

Oughta be a nice mini-hammer without the recoil associated with hammers in general...

The .22-250 is hard to beat when it comes down to coyotes, especially beyond 300 yards. I burned the barrel out of one at 4,200 rounds. I am on my second, but it only has 500 through it. Every time I shoot the .223 I wish I had a .22-250 for those "extra" long shots, which I always seem to get. BUT, the .223 is fun, because you can see your shots. Since you have a .223, you best go with the real work horse in .22-250. Oh, and crows really hate the .22-250. I don't think you will get the "pop" effect with the 60 grain Hornadys, in fact a lot of guys recommend them for small deer in the .22 calibers. They really hold together well. Something to think about. If you need to get rid of them, let me know Flinch

Flinch,
You're just so darned generous it makes me proud to be a member of this forum! LOL

James,
With the components you have listed and the 60 grain Hornadies, sounds like you have just about the perfect recipe there. You might want to consider a good bipod like a Harris if you don't already have one (or two). I'm finding I really like the small 9-13" Harris as a lot of my hunting is done where a prone position is necessary- Rock chucks, sage rats, and coyotes in short grass or small sagebrush. But I usually carry the tallest Harris so I can shoot sitting if necessary to get above the occasional prairie grass, wheat field, or taller sage and rocks. - Sheister
