I like it. Anybody else feel the same way? grin

There are plenty of new, whiz-bang cartridges.
There are other cartridges that are older.
But the 7mm Rem.Mag. is just a great cartridge in its own right.

I didn't start this for a 'caliber war', only to have a place for those that enjoy the '7 MAG'.

I shot my two biggest critters, a muley and an elk with a 7MM RM. When my son wanted a more powerful rifle than his .243 we bought him a Ruger 77 MKII in 7MM RM. I could have just given him mine but a guy just never knows when he might one.

It used to run neck and neck with the .30-06 as the most popular cartridge. Just dont seem to hear much about it anymore.
My dad had bought a Rem M700 Sendero around 1992 I think, and he shot that rifle so much that the throat was worn away so bad that every bullet traveled .750 to the rifling and it still shot groups under 1/2 inch. It really liked the Speer 160gr Mag-Tip. I shot this rifle for a while before it finally got rebarreled, and it was unbelievable how well it would shoot being that worn out. You had to load it with Weatherby data to get the velocity up, with IMR4350, I think.

I have one and like it very much. Mine's a Winnie stainless classic with a 26" barrel. It was used when I got it and I've shot the heck out of it. It'll shoot fed premium 160 Nosler Partitions under 3/4 MOA all day long, and my handloads the same. It has the tupperware stock on it. Last year I was deer hunting, and killed a coyote at 306 yards with it - load was a 140 gr nosler ballistic tip,

and then tipped over a nice mulie about 6 hours later with the same load, at about 30 yards.

Quite a rifle...

Hi Mike,

I loved my 7 Rem Mag....until I bought a chronograph. That's when I noticed that the velocities I got from factory ammo was about the same as the 280 Rem.

Even handloading, I had to pack a lot more powder in the 7 Rem Mag to outdo the 280.

I shot my two biggest bucks with my 7 Mag and the 160gr Sierra HPBT Gameking. That bullet is loooong, shoots flat, and penatrates like no body buisness. However even using 64 grains of RL 22, it could not get over 2800 fps.

I easily get 2850 fps with the 165gr Sierra HPBT Gameking with my 30-06 using 58.5 gr of H4350.

Still like the 7 Mag, but it is a handloaders round, otherwise factory loaded 280 will usually come within 50 to 100 fps in any bullet weight.

Gee, Mike, your post makes me feel old. I remember when the 7Mag WAS the new, whiz-bang cartridge.

I still like it, but I'm also still mad at it for dethroning the 264Mag. grin

Another fan here.

The 24" Lilja-tubed rifle I set up for my dad runs 140s at 3200-3250 and 160s at 3000-3050. Not too shabby, considering the high BC's that those bullets have.

I have used a M70 Stainless Classic 7mm RM for more big game hunting than any other gun and have always been very pleased with it. I do realize that it is not all that different from my other favorite, the 30/06. The 30/06 generally seems to use less powder to get about the same results and can also hold more cartridges in a magazine. I got the M70 in 7mm RM because that what was on the dealer's rack at the moment and I already had lots of ammo for a M700 Sendero in 7mm RM. I would probably have taken a 30/06 home if a M70 Stainless Classic in 30/06 had been on the dealer's rack next to the 7mm RM. I eventually got a recently made blue/wood M70 in 30/06, but it just does not feel as good or work as smoothly as my older SS 7mm. I have M70's in a variety of chamberings from .243 to .375 H&H but usually grab the 7mm RM when I go hunting. I will be in a stand tomorrow evening with it loaded with 160 TSX Barnes loaded to about 2800 f/s (65 gr of H1000).

I hadn't considered that point when I posted...good one!
Of course, I was only 6 when the 700/7mm combo was introduced. wink
I've got some old pix of my current 7's I'll post tomorrow.
More pix!

For a guy that has no particular feelings towards the round, I find it curious that I have ended up with two... a synthetic stocked Mark X Maused and a Savage, also with a plastic stock. I'm not sure I have ever shot either one. Both were purchased from friends with domestic problems for next to nothing. Gotta love it when a guy hates his soon-to-be-ex more than loosing their butt on a rifle.

i like the 270 win and 06' rounds, but bought my son a model 700 in 7remmag as his first big game rifle. i'm quite sure he will never need another. he's going to take his first elk with it in the next few days. great round imo, which has taken everything in north america numerous times.

My tang-safety Ruger with a Vari-XII has been my go-to rifle for a long time. It always does the job. Like most of my rifles it's slow: seldom chronies what the books say. Very accurate. Has accounted for a lot of deer and good memories. That's why I'm getting rid of it next month. When I go out to visit my son's family I'm going to pass it on, call it an early Christmas present. Besides, I need the room in the safe. I like the cartridge a lot, but truth be known, I doubt my life would be much different today if the rifle'd been a .270, .280, or .30-06. Coulda killed just as many deer, just as far away and just as dead.

While quite a few other cartridges have joined the stable, my old 700 7 Mag. is still the "Meat -n- 'taters" rifle I trust the most.

A gun writer/ survival expert named Mel Tappan said, way back when the 7mag was new, that they tried to match the trajectory of the 270 with the knock down power of the 30-06.
It didn't really accomplish either and it probably wouldn't succeed.
He was a little wrong, huh?

I'm in the middle of putting a .264Win mag together now and have thought to myself several times if I shouldn't have just done a 7mag. It's a great cartridge.

The .416 Remington Magnum has been said to have the trajectory of the .375 H&H and knockdown power of the .458 Win.Mag. Another Remington cartridge that has done quite well and fared better than its parent cartridge.

Here's my very old pix of my 700/7mm and BAR/7mm, both of which are undergoing a 'new look'.
Too bad I can't do the same for ME! laugh

I'll be taking my 7 Mag Rifles Inc. Lightweight M-70 to Alberta for Whitetail and Mulie in 9 days. I've loaded 160 gr Accubonds for the occasion.
