any suggestions on a decent fixed power scope to go on a marlin 44 mag?? 1st time to do this so I don't really want to spend lots of $$ around $50 or so...
Also, I think i'd like to get a removable base so I can shoot open sites at times and use the scope for hunting purposes--this is dooable, rught? Abd will I have to re-site the gun in each time I put the scope back on?

Thanks

Irons will serve you better than the path you hint at................

Then you are better off ponying up the bucks to get something that will actually work.....................

As a minimum, stick with used examples of known quantities.

50 bones will yield nothing but frustration and make the second(replacement) purchase even more expensive..........................

I always go by the words of the late John Ruskin:
'It's unwise to pay too much...but it's worse to pay too little. When you pay too much, you lose a little money, that's all. When you pay too little, you sometimes lose everything, because the thing you bought was incapable of doing the thing it was bought to do'

I remember the first time I heard Stick say those words and I haven't forgot them....it's very good advice and I have yet to regret living by them, I believe it has even kept me out of trouble.

lubbockdave,

If I were you I'd double the budget (or thereabouts) and look at the fixed-power Weavers K-series. I have had a 2.5x and a 4x and both were very reliable. Sold the 2.5 on top of a rifle, still have the 4x on a muzzleloader.

You may even find a used one in your price range on eBay.

And in this price range forget about detachable mounts -- if you have a good scope of appropriate magnification, you won't need to switch to irons.

Ditto on the used K2.5 Weaver

Rugged, click adjustments, fully multi-coated and you can find them for bargain prices. Also, the small size & weight fits a lever gun just fine.

they beat me to it- ditto on the Weaver classic. You can get it in 2.5x, 4x, or 6x. I have a 6x on one of my rilfes and it is very bright. Seems to track accurately and is small and light. Natchez has them for about $120. You can find used ones on ebay for half that if you are patient. Must be tough little scopes as a lot of older ones are still around.

ill also recomend the k series. i have the 4x on a 6.5 pound nef 45-70 single shot. at first i didnt shoot it much but then i came upon a case of pmc 405s for 11$ a box. ive shot that case, a few boxes each of rem405, federal 300(most accurate) and about 5 rounds of buffalo bore, the scope has held up well. definitly go for matte finnish the gloss looks retarded.
