Went to the local Duck's fundraiser on Sat. me and a buddy bought 3 tickets on the rifle and one came thru for us.My buddy does not hunt and wants me to have the rifle. While it is not exactly free(my buddy wants $200 for his half of the rifle)it is a steal of a deal. Reminton SPS with 3-9 bushnell and carry case.I was never keen on the 300 and would much rather have a 325 but what the heck it is a good deal. What does everyone think about the 300 wsm?

Load er up with some Barnes TSX and it will take anything you want within reason!!
The 300WSM is my goto elk rifle. I load up 150gn Barnes TSX and have complete confidence in shooting pretty far out there!! I took a cow with it a couple of years ago at 523 yards. BTW, they go out at 3200fps and are accurate. You just have to find the sweet spot just off the rifling to see it work!!
You may want to replace the plastic stock with another if you put any pressure on the fore end, it will change the bullet impact. I found a laminated stock on ebay that works great!!
Good Luck!!

Give it back to your friend and ask for $200.

Mr. 257STW; Congratulations on winning the rifle, it sounds like a nice piece.
Some folks seem to have had issues with the WSM cartridges feeding so I might be inclined to check that before I proceed too far with any modifications on it.
As for the cartridge, two of my friends have or had them, one a Kimber and one a Savage. Both fed and shot very well and the fellows spoke well of them.
One chap had some issues with a particular lot of brass requiring inside reaming so the cases didnt collapse when he seated the bullets, but I wouldnt count that against the cartridge.
Good luck with your new acquisition.
Regards, Dwayne

I have a rifle like that and same caliber, it is surprisingly accurate with factory ammo, and the SPS comes with their R3 pad which is made by LimbSaver. Nice rifle.
However, if you are really wanting a 325, why not sell the the you won, split the money with your friend and put the rest on a 325?

257STEW,
You'll enjoy the 300 WSM. It is a fine calibre. 180 grain TSX will serve you very well. You might also look at a 168 grain TSX or 165 grain Accubond. Either will perform very well on the game you will encounter in that area of the province.
Where did you say we are going? And why are we in this handbasket?

I used a .300WSM to kill my Oryx Bull on WSMR at over 450 yards with 1 shot, Fusion 165 gr. Bang! Thump! Plop! Pretty much!

150gr Nosler E Tips and you'll be good to go. Wrong -- 168 TSXs at 3000 FPS are the ticket . . . . BMT

A buddy like that, I'd tell him he can have the rifle, all you want is the amount of the tickets you contributed. That's all it is worth, winning something at a charity event like that, to me is like never having it in the first place. If you can spend the bucks, buy your own rifle, you'll like it much better that way.
I do like the 300WSM.

I think when all the Short Magnum, Super Short Magnum, Ultra Short Magnum, Ultra Super Short Magnum, Super Ultra Really Short magnum cartriges shake out - the .300 WSM may be one of the rounds still around when many others have fallen by the wayside and you have to wait for some foundry in North Korea or Wazakazakstan to make a run of appropriate size brass. Just my $700,000,000,000.00 worth!
If a dollar is about six inches long, $700 Billion would stretch more than 66 MILLION miles - about 2/3 the distance to the Sun from Earth!! Feel free to check my math.

Well I could not resist phoning the smith and a new barrel was quite expensive but low and behold he had an 8mm mag take off that can be turned down and rechambered for a decent price so I am sending it off tomorrow. I learned one thing about being a gun nut and that is to get the calibers I want so it is going to end up as a 325wsm.
