To follow the post re: Rainguard, anyone using the firefly feature and have an opinion on it?

I've got a used 2.5-10 Elite 4200 on the way with this feature as I figured it might come in handy on dark rainy mornings in the thick timber of the PNW.

Thanks in advance.

Anyone have an opinion grin Couldn't resist. wink
I have learned heavy reticles are not the problem "shooting small" as some believe. Get your rig zeroed and set up some clay birds at 200 yards and shoot them from the bench. You'll have much more confidance in the heavier reticle. I know I do.

I hate the one I have. I much prefer a standard reticle after that one Firefly.

Had a 3200 with Firefly. Didn't like it at all.

Feel the same way about the one I have. It's just too heavy to my liking.

You won't use it more than twice -

If darkness is the issue go Illuminated vs. the glow int he dark.

HOWEVER - the heavy cross hairs are good and bad with low light.

I have a 3200 3x9 model on a Triumph Muzzleloader. I really like it. You can use the 3-2-1 reticle for known distance like the BDC in Nikon's. The center is plenty fine for fairly long shooting.

have one on two different rifles, love them both. Don't mind the larger lines.

Ditto, but if you're asking the question, you don't really want to hear either....................

I think the FireFly reticle reticle is a fad, but I do have two 4200 with the reticle and I like the design for low light shooting more so than the ability of the reticle having a glowing feature. Personally, I wouldn't want to be shining a light down the ocular while hunting.

I am one of the 4200 fans on this board, but I am not into the big arse reticles. had the illuminated 2.5-10x50 (prolly THE brightest clearest scope I have ever owned) and the 2.5x10 firefly. they are the same size reticles on both and too big for me.

Fire Fly reticles are the best way to spoil good people and prospective users from buying scopes with GOOD illuminated reticles.

thought I needed an illuminated reticle scope, bought a good Nightforce one, I dont hunt at nihgt so I don't need it, don't use it, turned it on at the lowest setting a couple of times, it was a "so what" factor! Avoid the ultra thin crosshairs (been there and done that as well) and if its legal shooting light you can shoot with non illuminate reticles. also no way I would be screwing around shining a flashlight thru my scope and worrying about how long it was "lit" when I was supposed to be hunting what a PITA. Get the Leupold thick crosshairs or the Zeiss #4 if your worried about it. Most of my hunting this year has been with a rapid Z reticle which surprizingly seems to work quite well at dusk and dawn.

Wow, RD, I didn't think you would give them such high praise. I also wanted to add that when I did "charge" the reticle, it didn't glow as long as they would like you to believe it would. The best use for the little flaslight they give you with the scope is for a keychain when your too hammered to find your keys in the dark. If you want to use the FF option, buy a Stinger, SureFire or something of like quality.

There is to be distinguished between two different types of illuminated reticles:

1. ill.ret. for low light use only:
If you don`t hunt in dawn or dusk, and not in non-moonlit nights, there is no need for it.

2. ill.ret. for "day & night" use:
These are the most versatile reticles you can think of because during the day, in "daylight positions", the bright, lit dot is the best way to help slaying running game. In low light, the "dimmed" dot is good for difficult shots. There is several "night" positions (even as low as no more visible with the naked eye but beeing useful with military night goggles)

My annual bounty is several Hundred head of hooved game, about half of it shot running, 40 % hunted in damn and dusk and the rest (pigs) at very low light. So I prefer Zeiss Varipoint and Schmidt und Bender Zenith scopes with "day and night" reticles. The crowd of GE hunters is thinking similar. YMMV.

I had 2 of them, and I hated them. I sold them on eBay for more than I paid.

I must admit, the sense or nonsense of my statement was lost in translation.

What I was trying to say was, that FF-reticles are the WORST example of the good idea of illuminated reticles.
