hi everyone
i've not been updating myself on optics news for a while and i'm in the market for a new pair
what are the best pair you can buy for around $1500 . i love swarovski 10x42 EL , leica 10x50 bn . what's new that is compatible to these two ? my preference is at least 10 power and minimum of 42 objectives .
thanks

All of the Alpha 10x42 and 10x50 binoculars typically retail for significantly more than the $1500 price limit you listed. However, my suggestion would be to check out Cameraland Ny's demo list. These are "like new" binoculars with excellent warranties. A quick browse of the Alpha 10x produced the following...

Leica Ultravid 10x50 BR $1099.99
Zeiss FL 10x42 $1549.99

Those are the two that fit the criteria you listed for optical performance and price.

Hope this helps.

Another that would fit and be a little under (or right at) budget would be the Minox HG. The HG's have faired very well in comparison with the "Alpha" binos. Here's a link to cameraland:

The demo Ultravids are the deal at present.

I've been doing a little comparison work lately with my Promaster and some top end binoculars. I'll post about that later. I have to say that the binocular among the expensive glass that impressed me the most is the Steiner x44 XP binocular. The one I looked at was priced at $1,300. There is not much love for the Steiner binoculars, so some people will tend to go "gaaaag!" at that particular recommendation. Still it is easily a top end alpha quality binocular and has a hell of a lot to recommend it. It fits optically with the best. Ergonomically it has to be my favorite. Anyway, do not be afraid to take a look at one.

Other than that I second Frank D's and Daveh's recomendation.

Leica Ultravid 10x50 BR $1099.99
Zeiss FL 10x42 $1549.99
Swarovski SLC 10x42 $1539.99

Pick between the three, and the one that fits you best, and I seriously doubt you could go wrong.

If you forget price and brand loyality you REALLY need to consider the Promaster Infinity Elite ED series.
I have the 8x42 and compared it to 8.5x42 Swaro and it is TOUGH to see a difference. I looking forward to Steve's comments.

Sambo, with the money you are willing to spend I think you nailed the "best" right there- Leica and Swarovski.

i went to cabela's tonight and just to compare and tried all the major brands , my favourite was swarovski 10x42 el but at $1969 it's a little steep, then i looked at the Leica Geovid 10x42 , they really were pretty good considering the range finder and binos in one set . i see camera land has some demos for $1849.00 , but with only one year warranty . is it life time warranty on new ones?
anyone has any experience with these ?
i'll buy from dough before anyone tells me i need to do so, just went to cabela's to look at them first hand .

sambo, I just bought a pair of 15x56 swaro "demo" bino's from doug. I think he just called em' demos so he could mark them down......they are that nice.

fwiw, I have a pair of 12x50 leica's from the lifetime warranty era and they are WAY nice to look through. I can't tell any clarity/brightness difference between them and my swaro, but the swaro's image is bigger. the 12x50's can be hand held, the 15's no way. anyhow they are for sale in the swap meet, as well as a pair of el's that daveh has a deal going on.

if you go leica/zeiss/swaro you are gonna be pleased.

of the group the ultravids are a steal at $1099. If 50mm is too large the zeiss FL's are execellent glass.
Samplelist.com has a pair of 8.5x42 el's for $1599 used. I have 10x42 EL's and love them but if buying today I might go with the Zeiss FLs or Ultravids, all of them are close enough that I'd take the best deal..............dj

The Leikas that Pugs brought our last silhouette shoot courtesy of Doug or Rick(???) were nothing short of amazing.

Depth of field ?????? WOW. From almost back to the firing line all the way out to the 500 Meter rams. Spectacular.

Edge to edge(FOV) was nothing short of amazing. Crisp comes to mind.

I have the Leica 10X42 BNs and Swaro 15X56, really like 'em both, but always leave the Leicas home anymore. Putting the Swaros on a tripod will make a good spotter out of anyone and after a while you get better at holding them steady even w/o the tripod. If I had bought the Swaros first, I'd have saved a bunch of money.

Just finished up a full hunting season with my new 10x42 Zeiss Fl's. They are EXCELLENT!!!!! You won't be dissapointed.

My friends with current Swarovski and Leica glass kept commenting on how bright they are. No doubt after using them in the field in different lighting conditions and in different types of terrain they are the brightest 10x42 glass currently on the market. Someone will post that they are too light for a 10x glass but I have had no problem steadying them.
