Guy on the 4 wheeler drove over to take pictures and drool. He doesn't have any elk to shoot on his unbelievably over-priced ranchette a few miles from where we shot our bulls. Seems the semi-subdivision created by the sale of all those ranchettes chased em' off or something.

Ballistic Tips are bad medicine - good thing we don't eat elk ribs because one entire side of each bull looked like it got hit by a train when we skinned em'.

Ranger,
Your post and pictures made my day. I too am tired of out of staters and others buying up land and locking it up. I just lost 600 acres of land I've hunted for years to some Caliphuckians with a fat wallet. Such are the times I guess, but when you can pull off a coup like you did it's like doing it for all of us. Good on ya!!!

That did it.. Now every egg beater that flies by is going to get a look from you.

"How did you guys miss that blowout? We lost three yards of mud!"..
"Sam was staring at the helicopter.."

That's how you do it! Congrats! Awesome story - have always wanted to hear that somebody was doing that! Thanks for sharing..

I have a good friend who's a chopper pilot and know another that owns his own chopper. I've considered it in a couple of places (landlocked public) but was deterred by FWP wardens who cited some possible issues regarding the regulations on landing a chopper on certain types of public land.. not BLM.

But with respect to being just outside Bozeman.. haha. I doubt it. From your photos, it appears to be gentle country farther to the east. This is "just outside" Bozeman.. opening day.. laugh

However, this is a great shot and I've fantasized about such possibilities dozens of times while hunting elk in Montana.. This is a shot I'm sure I'll remember for a long time, especially when packing elk out of a hellhole in the years to come.

I really fail to see the purpose of forbidding the use of choppers for transportation within NF lands. Seems a blatant favortism of large landholders and their desires to lock up public lands. Shame that the state sees fit to pander to them.

Could be that it was east of Bozeman, I'm thinking I saw a sign that said Livingston. I don't lay any claims on being a mountain man, give me mountains like that area every time.

Livingston, Lewistown, all the same..I love the fact that you did this as I'm sure it BURNS those landowners that feel they own the public wildlife. I would have paid the price of your ride to be able to view some of them watching a chopper lift two bull elk outta there.. that's priceless.

Busted up antlers like that are a sign of good bull elk numbers..

Rumor has it that due to the mild weather, they are going to extend the season again this year an extra 2 weeks due to low harvest. It's a shame that hunters can't be used to adjust elk numbers even when they are plentiful on public land accessable to anybody with a pair of boots.

Come to Bozeman, elk everywhere... shoot'm up. laugh

Yeah, and the one bulls tongue hanging out looks way cool. Reckon what that Elks' buddies thought when they saw him "go up into the clouds"?
