Ok Ok I confess!!
After 35 years of rifle buying and a non stop love affair with bolt guns I might have done something really stupid the other day.
Browsing through my local used gun shop I came across a pretty nice used 99F in .308.

Two things came to mind as I shucked the lever on that sweetheart.
Number one was the postings here that I've been reading for the last 6 months or so and number two was the fact that in all those years of gun buying and selling I've never owned a 99.

The 99F came home with me but here's the problem....there's also a 99E and a 99C and a really old one that I couldnt identify in 300 Savage.

Now I'm back at work for the next 3 weeks and having trouble sleeping at night.

Is this normal?

You have caught it and there is no cure , don't even try to resist, it is futile
Now get rid of those nasty old boltguns & buy more 99s

RESISTANCE IS FUTILE, YOU MUST ASSIMILATE...

Mike...

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

I'd say go have a look at the real old one if it's in 300 Sav.

It could be a hard to find 99.

We can help you through this ruff patch but we need serial ranges and details. grin

Start with the old one. Look for the extra holes and cracks.

Thanks Guys. I will have a real close look at that old one if its still there when I get back.
I'm a pretty good judge of "old irons" it's just I've never put that judgement talent to use on 99 Savages before.
No real Bubba work on any of them although the E was pretty loose and the C had a recoil pad installed.
It came down to a choice between the old .300 and the F.

I'll get some pictures up on that 99F as soon as I can.
Maybe by that time it will have one or two of it's older brothers to pose with! smile

Thanks again and I will be asking lots of questions in the future.

Who know? If this keeps up I may be auctioning Remington 700's by the pound!! laugh laugh

Just as a quick judge of your start.. lever safety on that 99F, or a tang safety? grin

Pictures at www.savagela.org of almost every model of 99, and Murray's book is still available. And don't worry.. you still have the old 1920 bolt actions, the old Savage pistols, and then the early 22's to get addicted to yet. grin

For sure a lever safety model. Brass carrier and original sights by the looks of them.
Steel (alloy???) butt plate and pistol grip.
The blue is a little thin on the receiver from being carried but the stock looks pretty good with hand checkering. (complete with overruns)
I wish I had brought it along with me to work so I could give you a serial number but I think it's 6 digits.
If I had to guess with what little I know of 99's I'd say maybe early 60's version???
Does that sound about right?

Very good.. a lever safety 99F makes it a late 50's model. Best kind to have, until you find a good EG to hunt with. grin
