Fresh in from my range and it was another fairly impressive chain of events.

The Boy has been hounding me to get him some trigger time on his fresh built 10/22 and to bang away with the ROCK-ish 223AI some more. Work has been hectic and today was the day to get brass burpin' done.

Soooooo off we went, with a crummy wooded with "stuff",running the gamut from a fresh brick of 22lr fodder to a Stanley thermos bottle.

We had a full compliment of gallon milk jugs filled with water and set them out at random locations. Also had some quart water bottles and set them likewise. Hung paper at 505yds,for some dope confirmation(new lot of H-335 in the 223AI) and set a small gong at 100yds for 10/22 fun.

First order of business was a 367yd milk jug for The Boy's 25-284. I sat behind the Zeiss spotter and told him to do his thang when all was right. I mighta seen it nuke, before I heard it,but it was a damned good race. Been a spell since I've shot jugs that close and the audible "Whooomp" warranted up close investigation,so we immediately saddled the crummy and trotted off in it's direction. The 75gr V-Max worked in spectacular fashion and literally shredded the jug and only remnants remained,The Boy liked that,as did the OldMan. No wonder I'm sweet on the combo, even in a "lumbering" 22 inch spout?!!?

Holstered his 25-284 and had him bust the ROCK-ish 223AI out and take a fling at a quart water bottle at the same distance. He laced it squarely via first poke, though not much of a test of said rifle the commotion was still pretty impressive. Things launched nicely, via 50gr V-Max.

The wind was doing a fair job,as it most always does and we had a little 500yd paper punching competition. He flung three ROCK-ish pokes at his bull and I sent a trio to mine. Results were denoted through the spotter and I hung about a 2.25"-ish cluster strung in horizontal fashion, due to my not quite doping the wind concisely. Two were in the black, the thirds just a touch out,but still tidy work, granted conditions and BC. He suffered palsy or something similar at poke #2 and was left to have hind tit to himself.(grin)

As we were gearing up to go long,a recognized rig sauntered our way,so we ceased fire and awaited it's arrival. The gent is a local yocal I've chatted with several times about things "gunny" and distance shooting in particular. He'd come to gawk at the spectacle. After a cup of mud and some small talk,I gave him the rundown upon what had transpired and the plan of attack for going longer. You could see the disbelief upon his mug.

While that chat was happening,The Boy was fishing around on the bags(laying prone) getting dogged in for the next round. That was a gallon jug at 541yds. I had him dope the scope, via cheetchart affixed to the buttstock, willed my 10x40 Classics to our visitor and I lay prone behind the spotter. After a short peek,I gave him a windage correction(3MOA) and told him to work [bleep] over. First poke struck a smidge above center and about an inch to the right of center, drawing obvious water, but not unsettling the jug. Had him shoot again and it landed more amidship and the third poke caught some wind and was about 2 inches to left of centerline, again spilling more water. I turned to look at our visitor and you coulda knocked his off'n him with a stick!(grin)

As he geared up to go long at 675yds,on another jug, said visitor was in TOTAL disbelief at such an attempt. This whole excersize was new to him and the possibilities not fully comprehended. I had The Boy remove some windage dope,as the longer shot was at an angle different to the prior setup and engaged the wind in more of a quartering motion, taking it more head-on.

First poke was an inch low and centered and the Boy said his hold was good,so he cranked the glass another minute up in elevation. Next poke drove it in the waistline, ever so slightly right of center and the jug remained stationary. Third poke caught it a touch lower and more centered, dislodging it from it's dirt perch, toppling it down the hillside.

We was then outta jugs. I remain heap much impressed with the amazing consistency of the V-Max projectiles. I swear they shoot like they had eyes and make the "difficult" a snap. The ROCK-ish blueprint is simply an amazing sumbitch and said pard was nearly suffering a stroke in amazement. Made it sweeter yet, that it wasn't me on the trigger. The Boy was pretty hot on the switch this afternoon.

Retiring the centerfires,we waltzed through the better part of a brick of 22lr's in his massaged 10/22. My thrust is to get him fasterer/betterer,from off of his hindlegs, for Rut Deployment. He was smoked hard on a Hogger Buck(never got a crack at him) and hasn't forgotten it and is striving to keep that from happening again. Am thinking I'll retire my 6" swinging gong from centerfire abuse and keep it for a 100yd 22lr system. Audible confirmation is always good and doing the Ratty-Tat-Tat Thing on the swinging gong, grants satisfying motion to boot.

Whatcha boys wanna bet that there is a new 223AI convert, due solely to an 11yr old making long distance connections as per his whim?(grin)

Another satisfying afternoon, even if I didn't get to shoot that much.......................

Sounds like the kinda day we would all like to have.
Glad you shared it with us.
You and your boy can be proud of the shooting and sure glad to hear that he is getting the right kind of practise.
It will pay great rewards when he is hunting.

All he can think about now,is stomping the Alpine with his 25-284.

I'm thinkin' I can arrange that foray, though his wish for the ROCK-ish 223AI to become part of his stable, fell upon deaf ears........................(grin)

Sounds like a very enjoyable outing. Nice to hear The Boy is kinda gettin' the hang of things. Must be a chip off the Big Stick.
My boy's off to college so our range time is greatly diminished. Sure miss our time together.

I can't wait for him to get enough lead in his azz,to shoulder the brunt of the load.

I'll savor that flavor................

I know what you mean, however you let him be a boy for as long as you can. It's only a few short years...he'll become a man soon enough. Cherish these years now. It may be cliche but the time really does fly by, and in a few short years, you're gonna be wishin' he was 11 again.

Kids are a hoot and a constant source of my entertainment. This year is gonna be good,as Baby Boy has enough lead in his ass(just turned 3) to tag along on many forays.

Sissy is in her constant state of high alert for an immediate Fishing Trip and Jughead will get a kick outta that too.

The Boy will get time especially for him,as the two younger siblings cain't make the Mountain march(yet).

I keep telling Big Momma that one of these days we are gonna wake up and be old. I'm digging the ride................

I got mine in reverse order. My oldest daughter no longer wants to fish or shoot with the old man (8 year old). The middle daughter (6 year old) needs three supervisors to keep her holding still and keep her finger off the trigger. Youngest boy of 2 just wants to take all the screws out and see what makes things tick. Tiz a hoot watching the wonder in his eyes. Wouldn't trade any of them for the world. Flinch

Uhh Oh Flinch, thats the way I was when I was a kid. Totally dismantled my parents kitchen table when I was 3. Would get a new remote Control and drive it for 2 days and disassemble on the third. Watch him close, you never know what he will be taken apart next, trust me I know LOL.

As for my 4 year old daughter, she is all girl. I just hope some of her Dad shows up soon or I prolly wont have a fishin partner with her. She did get pretty excited tho last fall when I was driving with her up hunting and saw a pine hen that I tried to shoot with the .22 After I missed she told me I need to try harder next time LMAO.

Hey Hog,
Beautiful kids! Ask my 7 year old daughter what she wants to be when she grows up. A professional hunter in Africa.

The kids are the most important thing we have. Guns, Jobs, money, cars don't mean didly.

Way to go you guys that drag along any kids you can.

Big Stick, I'm way more impressed with you shooting with
your 11 year old than I am with your rifle collection.
(and I really covet your collection)

Chris,

Good on you,she's a doll..............

Hog,

You is gonna need a couple extry shotguns to keep the boys at bay.(grin)...................

Mike,

I'm more proud of my Kid Collection, than any trinkets I might have laying around. Am pretty proud of Big Momma too,but as I've only got one of her,so she isn't quite a "collection",though I'm not gonna toss her back.(grin)

Good to see you hitting the keyboard again,am hoping all is well in your world...................

Hog and Jamison, there's gonna be some hearts a breaking in a few years. I am with Big Stick, you're gonna need at least TWO shotguns laying around to keep the wolves at bay My 8 year old is already tired of all the boys following her home. The funny part is, as soon as they see all my hunting stuff, they become boys again and want to start loading bullets and taking things apart. My daughter says, "Dad, every time a boy comes over to play, he leaves me and plays with you and your shooting stuff." I love it! Flinch

Hogwild,

Having all girls is not necessarily a bad thing. I only had two. Always wanted a son, too. But never quite made it. But it all evened up. My oldest gave me two grandsons. I like that even better. When they misbehave, I just take them home.

Sounds like y'all had a hell of a day. Glad to see he's learning how to get it done at a young age. Which components did you use for his 10/22.
