You do not have to tell them what's inside- only whether it's hazardous or fragile. Not sure how to handle the insurance side of it but I have shipped some pretty crazy stuff registered mail before!

The maximum they will insure for is $5K. Therefore is the value is over that you have to bear the risk. Hopefully they wouldn't damage too a total loss.
I don't know the policies of the common carriers like UPS.
I did ship priority rather than registered, cause the man behind the counter said it would slow it down. With insurance, you do have a tracking number so you can see where it is.
Hopefully it will make it safely, then just have to worry when it tries to come back.

When you send a package by registered mail, the $ limit for insurance goes up to $25K. Once the insurance amount goes beyond about $1000, it becomes cheaper to mail useing registered because the insurance rates for registered are far cheaper per dollar insured. It does slow it down slightly going registered but it is far more secure. Every person who handles the package has to sign off on it. If the gun is valuable, it is by far the best way to mail it.
When you are mailing a firearm, you DO have to tell them what is inside the package.

Thanks Customstox, I'll definitely do that the next time I ship.
By the way, it did arrive at the destination safely.
