Just bought a pair from REI on sale. Anyone have any experience or field report's. My first pair, normally wear the older style Danner hiking boot. They look to be a well made boot, I plan on using them as a training boot, for now. than's Coop

I bought a pair of Asolo Fugitive GTX at an REI garage sale a couple of years ago and I love them. I have a very narrow foot and I'm hard to fit. Great boots that have held up to alot of wear and tear.
I'll probably get a pair of HanWags next, but I'd be happy to get another pair of Asolos too.

I have an older pair of 520's that I got at an REI scratch and dent sale a couple of years ago. They have held up very well, though I don't use them for hiking or hunting anymore. I prefer a stiffer boot, and a lighter "light hiker". I have found them durable and comfortable. I don't know how much they have evolved in the past few years, but I love my pair.

I saw that sale and thought it was a great deal. I've had a pair of those for several years now and have used them for backpacking and hunting and they are still in excellent condition. They are designed for backpacking with a heavy load so they are pretty stiff, a little too stiff for stalking animals with a bow as they just don't allow you to be tender footed. They are also a little stiff for using around camp. They are a little too narrow for me in the toe box on the right boot so I develop a rub on the big toe after several hours but it has never been a problem.
Where they excel is with a loaded pack as they give great ankle support and they dig well into the soft stuff for great climbing. I use them for chuckar hunting and they are good for climbing but not great on the loose hard stuff or when descending unless the ground is soft.
But the quality of construction and materials is excellent and its looking like the soles on my pair is wearing out before the leather is even showing any wear. I think you will be very happy with them in these applications.
