I've never seen a Zeiss glass named Safari. That certainly does not mean they don't exist. Check out this review and see if these are what you have. http://www.holgermerlitz.de/seven8x30.html

steve. the pair i am getting are a roof prism design.here is some info from a camera shop. i cant get the picture to tranfer.
Distinguished by olive green rubber armor, this sturdy binocular offers a comfortable non-slip grip and high eyepoint eyepieces. Each eyepiece focuses separately from the other. Although created for use on safari, this reliable model has been a hit in all corners.
Specifications:
Magnification 8 Objective diameter 30mm Field of view at 1000 m 120m Infinite adjustment range to 7m Focusing range +/-6dpt Twilight performance 15,49 Exit pupil 3,75mm Relative geometric brightness 14,06 Interpupillary distance from - to 56,5-75mm Length (eyecup elongated) 141mm Width (PD 65) 114mm Weight 600g

I have been considering these binoculars too, as I feel they might be one of the most reliable made. However, I have not heard from anyone considering the quality of the optic, and how it performs under various conditions. I do think they will be a highly reliable optic though. Here is the link at Zeiss. Is this your binoculars? http://www.zeiss.de/c12567a80033f8e4/Contents-Frame/19f373518a2add66c1256f80003aeeec

Well, I think there were some other posts regarding this binocular that said it was one of the most reliable made and that nikon had come out with a copy at one time. The current one with the link above is a binocular that Zeiss has reintroduced from previous production. I would like to have one. Let us know how it compares if you can get together some hight dollar binocs. matt

the pair i am getting is supposedly 20 or so years old. i dont know what type of lens coatings they will have. im sure they will have multi coatings, but how would you tell if they are phase coated? oiginal owner did not have the box. The T* multi-layer AR coating came in in the late 1970s (IIRC) so they probably will have a ML coating. Easy to check by the color of the reflected light: purple or green for ML; distincly blue single layer MgF. Phase coating is right on the bubble for a 20 year old Zeiss. It came in on the Dialyt's in 1988. So the odds are it doesn't have PC if it is 20 years old. With resolution charts that you can rotate (and align to the roof edge of the roof prisms) you could probably make the measurement to check. Without PC the resolution perpendicular to the roof edge (i.e. with the lines on the chart running parallel to the roof edge) will be about 2 to 3 times worse than at right angles to that. So measure the resolution of the bin (with a booster telescope to take your eyes out of the calculation) with and across the roof edge direction. You find the direction of the roof by looking though the objective (perhaps with a flashlight). It will be different for each barrel and it won't be vertical or horizontal (to avoid you noticing the effect in a man-made environment). Someone used to looking at roofs of that era should also get a feel for the change in the view: a little less sharp and a little less contrasty. Another approach: take the serial number and ask Zeiss ...

I have read about these binos. The reviews said they were very good glass, especially if they had the prism coated and had T* coatings. The only negative was the field of view (dnot as wide as some of the newer binos). In the past, you could order these binos from Zeiss with special coatings to cut down on glare from ice/snow.

They appear to be the IF version of the Zeiss 8x30 B/GA Classic C (or 20 years ago the Zeiss 8x30 B/GA Dialyt) so perhaps hunting for eBay or classified prices on that bin might give you a hint.
But in general I find used 20 year old Zeiss Dialyt's are usually seriously overpriced compared to modern bins.
Another route would be .... how good is it compare to a current CF Zeiss 8x30 Conquest and price it down from that?
Or take the highest price offered (the market method of pricing).
