there is one of these for sale locally 20" straight grip would consider this over the shorter .44 marlin to be able to load heavier bullets longer, anyone know if they will feed in these given the longer action length?

I have the 1894/44 mag. As I recall when doing some internet research the 336 didn't function all that great with the 44 mag. I could be wrong on that.
On my 1894 I did a farmer chamfer of the bottom edge of the chamber with a dremnel and filed back the stop notch on the carrier so that a longer COAL could be used.
Feeds blunt nosed cast and longer COAL's slicker than snot.

I have no first hand experience but common "knowledge" says that the 336/44 had feeding issues. The 1894 was then re introduced to handle the short cartridges.

Yes, Marlin struggled for a time with the 336/44mag concept. They made a number of attempts to modify the carrier to make the 44mag work in the "long" action. They wisely decided to just bring out a shorter, lighter action, the 1894. I had one and was relieved when I finally sold it.

I owned a Marlin 336-44 Mag rifle for three years. I just sold it last month and only because I needed the money for Christmas shopping. In all the time I had it I never had a single feeding issue. I read about folks that say theirs do or that they heard that they do but I can tell you my worked flawlessly. They are also very hard to find and worth a chunk of change. They were only made from 1963 until 1967.

I don't think they will accept a heavier bullet loaded longer but never tried it in mine. Why not load up a dummy cartridge like that and try it in the shop if the owner will allow it?

I have one of these and I have feeding problems. I bought it for a song and a dance and now I need to have it looked at. One of these days I'll fix it up. For now it has to wait in line as I have other projects going on.
