The 280 Rem has had my curiousity for some time. I want one, but there are few options out there. From time to time you'll see one pop up. But its always at the wrong time.

I know the options wont get any better. But I just wanted to vent a tad grin

it's a great round, particularly if you reload. seems to me a fellow could find what he wanted in a used rifle, just requires some patience (which a lot of us don't have). good luck on your search.

The good news is that the used market has a pretty good assortment. I am curious about the caliber myself and just picked up one used myself in a Weatherby ULW off the "Fire". Have not shot it yet but if the factory target is an indication, it is a keeper.

I would look for one of the original wood/blue Remington 700 Mt. Rifles with floorplate (vs detach mag). This is a classic combo. I've been through several .280s, but am down to one now. A custom light weight 700 by Gentry built for our own Mule Deer.

I bought a .280 blue/wood Mountain Rifle here on the campfire and a synthetic Mountain Rifle stock. Put the barreled action in the synthetic stock with a blind magazine. It's for one of my grandson's birthday, but I have been sorely tempted to keep it for myself and give him something else out of the gun safe. It's an awfully nice rig--it shoots well and carries great...

Ive seen all of one's listed on GB...Im not a fan of wood. Reason being. Its really nice looking, and I'd be afraid of denting/scratching it. So I look at syn stocks.

So the search is still on...It would be nice if Kimber made on in the Montana.

You can find one in a SS/700KS if you're patient. Just put the money aside for it and pounce when one becomes available. I'd drop rdobrow a PM and ask him if he's got a couple in the safe and if he'd part with one. Daveh and I both bought 700KS's in 280 from him.

Love the 280. I've had one since 1981 - an old Ruger 77 in boat paddle stock. Have killed quite a few deer with it which is why it's semi-retired. Plus it won't hold a decent group any longer - maybe 1.5". Course its had a few rounds down the tube - used to be my only rifle and got used on everything from tin cans to bear for ~ 10 years. It deserves a rest smile

I haven't had it out this year due to wanting to try out a .270 WSM w/110 TSX, but it shot great last year. Attached is pic from old post using 139 Hornady/60 H4831SC.

Pic of my 280 Mtn Rifle. Picked up a McM Mtn Rifle stock on the campfire that showed up yesterday. 6x42 and Talley LWT's as usual.

Looks good and it'll be hard to leave this rifle at home.

Nice dogs... grin.

I've been shooting stuff with a .280 since 1986, from antelope to elk, including my biggest whitetail and my two biggest mule deer.

I now have three of them -- a Ruger tang safety, a Winchester M70 Featherweight, and a Remington mtn rifle in a Ti stock. My current bullet of choice is the 140 gr TSX at somewhat over 3000 fps.

.280's are ever so much finer than .270's or 7 RM's... grin.

I've got you all beat! Bought a new Remington Model 725 in .280 Remington in 1962. Elk, Mule deer, Blacktail Deer, Whitetail deer, antelope, Black bear, coyotes...... it does 'em all! laugh

i enjoy my .280 also, its a great round like was mentioned earlier especially when reloaded, you have a few more options over the .270, and about as many as the 30-06. fairly good sd and bc numbers not to bad as far as recoil goes either. mine prefers 140gr bullets for some reason likes r-22. i wish mine was something other than a ruger, but all that considered it shoots pretty good.
