Not an expert, but two books I like are by Jim Zumbo. One is Hunt Elk and the other Elk Hunting. I think both are well written and good reads. I know some people are critical of Jim for his comments a few years back on assault rifles, but you can't say he doesn't know about elk hunting. A lot of his hunting was done the same way an average guy would go out on public land and hunt.......in addition to the "guided" hunts he took and wrote about for ODL.

I would recommend three by Don Laubach in this order:
1) The Elk Hunter
2) Elk Tactics
3) Elk Talk

Timat and Blacktail scored big.

I think Wayne van Zwoll is the most under rated writer out there. His writing is always interesting, he never talks down to the reader, and his his style is very conversational. It's more like he's talking to you. His "Elk and Elk Hunting" book, especially the older publication, have many excellent nuggets for the novice and expert elk hunter. I stole all of my best ideas from him.

"Elk Hunting with the Experts" - Bob Robb Editor.

It has Merrifield Pride, Craig Boddington, Jim Zumbo, and more, plus, Larry Jones did the bowhunting section.

Anyway, a quick read that covers a lot of ground.

http://www.amazon.com/Elk-Hunting-E...mp;s=books&qid=1229584524&sr=1-1

Used for under $4.00 - I read mine again every year before I go hunting.

Anyone who knows how to contact Bob Robb should tell him to make this available again on Amazon.

Wayne van Zoll is OK, but his "Book of the 22" was awful.

A book is not necessary...One page can teach elk hunting..Get on the highest point you can, and find the deepest, thickest, nastiest, covered with blown down timber hole you can find, and be sure it's a place where no sane man would dare to venture, and there you will find your trophy bull, but only if you survive without haveing a heart attack, broken leg or go into chillblains or copopulsion...then you shoot him, then you have severe symptons regarding "oh my god, what have I done", and hopefully you will die a quick and humane death at that point, not while you are back packing 900 pounds of meat out on your back from the bowels of hell, and that is just to your horse, then you have a 6 hour ride in the dark to camp...:)

My daddy told me many years ago that hunting elk was simular to materbation, once you pull the trigger you have this terrible mess on your hands..Truer words were never spoken. smile

Allah be with your brother!

Aint that all about the truth!
If you make it out alive, you will soon find the SOB that shot his off the mirror of his truck, 200/600 yards from said camp.

Drink well!

I tell guys who hunt here that have not had success is to quit looking for a place that "looks good" to them and look for fresh sign. Elk are everywhere at one time or another. They don't stay in one place very long during hunting season. Human encroachment, rut, food all play into constant movement. Find FRESH SIGN.

If you really want him to learn about elk hunting, just print some of the posts by the experienced elk hunters who post here.
I've got lots of books. It's rare for me to find anything in the book stores that even matches what these guys will give you.
Same for other types of hunting. E
