Who here has actually chronographed the 270WSM. How does the WSM rate = 130, 140 & 150gr compared with the 270Win?

Any using TSX's in their 270WSM's. If so please tell.

I have rifles for both rounds as well as 7mm rifles.

I chose the 270 WSM more to get the rifle I wanted. A Kimber 8400 Montana weighs less than a factory 270 Win even with a 24" barrel on the Montana and a 22" featherweight on the 270 Win.

Of course the larger round will give a little more velocity.

Loading the same bullets and the same powders into both and shooting them in the same length barrels my 270 WSM was 150-200fps faster than my 270 Winchesters. (140gr Accubonds, RL-22 and 24" barrels).......................................DJ

Like the other posters said, the 270WSM can usually be expected to beat the 270 Winchester in velocity by 200 fps or so. Sometimes it does even better in my experience.

My Winchester Model 70 chambered in 270 WSM in pretty darned fast. Listed below are some of the velocities I have recorded:

90 grain Sierra/H 4831 = 3677 fps
110 grain TSX /IMR 4350 = 3585 fps
130 grain TSX /IMR 4350 = 3319 fps
140 grain Nosler PT/RL22= 3200 fps

Even factory Winchester Power Point loads that the factory claims should go 3150 fps averaged 3178 fps in my gun.

I get 3300 with 130's- BT's, SST or TTSX's. I'm running 140 TSX's and Accubonds at 3200 and a smidge. I see no reason with theose bullets to try any 150's. Mag pro with the 130's and RL22 with the 140's. So 200 fps real world average over the vanilla IME.

My .270 WSM is a Win M70 24" bbl.

Winchester Supreme 140-gr Fail-Safe = 3146 fps (factory spec is 3125)

Winchester Super-X 150-gr Power-Point = 3137 fps (factory spec is 3150)

My 22" bbl Ruger M77 .270 Win shoots my 140-gr handloads in the 2950-2990 fps range. I have never chronographed any factory ammo from this rifle. The WSM Winchester 70 is more accurate as well - I'm not looking back anyway, I like the .270 WSM

The one's I have worked with did about 3280 with the factory 130 gr bullet from a M70 FW and a Kimber Montana.I did not push,but got about 3225 with the 130.I stopped there.

Seems like,as others have said, it's good for 150-200 fps over the plain-vanilla version.

Same...........140AB's at 3,200+ fps.

Goin' to the 130 TTSX's soon..............you're thinkin MagPro's a better choice and helps the 130's along a bit better than RL22?

I always up for a better mousetrap..........appreciate any info you might have if you've compared the 2. Load development will be commencing soon.

I did my initial loading with 130's and used magpro. I went to 140's for the BC and most everyone recommended RL22. So I worked with it and got completely satisfactory loads. I'd not shy away from RL22 with the 130s or away from Magpro. I've had good results from both in .270 WSM.

Planemech and Magnumb--are you fellas able to get 7-10 loadings out of those cases and still have decent primer pockets?

Both are excellent cartridges and I would bet you dollars to donuts that in the hunting fields of this world that nobody can tell the difference in trajectory or killing power..

Either one of these calibers would suit me just fine, I just happen to have an old .270 Win. Pre 64 Fwt. so I suspect I will just stick with it......

Dober I'm getting that kind of brass life out of both my 300wsm and the 270wsm. The 270 shoots 4350 very easily past 3300 with both 130 NPT and Barnes TS. No signs of any kind of high pressure and super long brass life. The 270wsm is one of my faster barrels.

Thx, I for betting that 3300 is doable with good brass life and I'd be for betting as the speeds go up from there that the primer pockets will open up rather quickly.

The following is what I found in my .270 Win. and my Kimber .270 WSM.
In the .270 Win. I get ~2930 fps with a 150 Partition and 57 grs. of Rldr-22
In my WSM, I get ~ 3175 fps with a 150 gr. Partition and 69.5 grs. of Retumbo.
With the 130 gr. Barnes, I get anywhere from 3240 to ~ 3325 fps.
using 64.0 grs. of Rldr-19.
Have only tried Rldr-19 with the Barnes & have to do some more vel. checking. I may have had some chrono problems re. climate conditions since I only recently have started playing with them. Don't like the vel. swings. All of my vels. mentioned are averages for at least 5 shots and corrected back to the muzzle.

Also, the same response (which you've questioned me about before) in regards to the 300WSM where my 180's are movin' at 3,100 fps and a "smidge" (I like Plamemech's term, seems to disembolden/dissuade the skeptics/wannabe naysayers just a bit from becoming contentious for their own reasons).


Norma brass with the 300WSM and WW with the 270WSM. Just ordered early this mornin' 150 Norma brass for my 270WSM as I really like their brass. If I'm goin' to start over with all new load development with the 130 TTSX's, this would be the time to make the brass change as well. Why waste the WW brass if it's in used, but perfect condition......I just roll that way. It will be given to friends, become break-in brass and/or recycled.

For those also in the market for Norma brass (at least the 270WSM stuff), Cabela's has the best prices right now (that I've found and I looked pretty good), especially with their little $20 off a $100 deal goin' right now........that $20 rebate almost takes care of the shipping and tax........grin.

True enough. But I'll bet anyone who carried a 8 1/2 lb Winchester "Featherweight in 270 Winchester and then switched to a 6 1/2lb Kimber 8400 in 270 WSM will tell you there's a huge difference in how the rifles handle! This is a case where the rifles are more important than the chambering..............................DJ
