Picked up my 1899 today at the post office. 26" barrel 30-30 takedown D&T but pretty nice otherwise. Serial number 226XXX Can someone ballpark me a date of manufacture on the old girl? LOL and just like that suddenly there was three...

Now just to confuse the hell out of everyone lets bring up the transition question.
Is it an 1899A T/D or a 99B?

Serial that low should be marked 1899 but that doesn't make it either of the two.
Usually the ramped front sight would give away a B but with a 99B in that serial range it would have the same sights.
More or less, I don't think there is a way of telling the two apart that close together unless it was lettered.
Has anyone here ever had a 99B lettered that came back as a B or is the 99B?

Neither. Just the patent dates on the barrel (match to reciever serial numbers) Utica NY gun 1893,1899,1907 and 2-1909 dates with the months. Forearm wood carrys a different serial number than the gun but that really doesnt bother me.

Just going by a snippet in Murray's, if there is an "A" stamped, it should then be a 99-B...
Never Say Never!!!

How many of those models have you seen with a 26" barrel? I'm sure the gun is right as rain, just like to stir the pot a bit. We could argue night and day on this gun on whether it's an 1899A or 99B. There won't be a winner.

Mike... I better get some pictures up on this one. Checked and rechecked but nothing stamped on the reciever. I originally bought it as an 1899 but the reciept says 1899A. I picked up a 250-3000 in the same deal but I'll start a seperate thread on that one. Thanks very much for your replys and interest.

Well allright it is adjustable if you drift it left or right. Typing fast so I didnt discribe it as well as I should have. It's a basic one piece small straight blade set in a dovetail. Rear sight has no elevation ramp slot.
