I have heard of people buying #1 actions (maybe just barreled actions--i don't remember) directly from Ruger. I can't find any information on Ruger's website, do they still do this or is it a thing of the past?

I don't know about buying one from Ruger directly but Brownells used to sell them as barreled actions. I don't see them in the current catalog though.

Brownell's is the first place I wouold check for a barreled action. The Actions only have been made, but rarely have they been made available to the public. They can be easily identified in the SR&Co and address are stamped on the receiver flat opposite the serial#.

Upon Bob's mention, I just finished a search on their website and came up empty handed. Thanks to each of you though.

If you are wanting to make up a Custom rifle, some of the more common No.1's can be bought on the auction sites ay very good prices. After you sell the wood, you are in to a barreled action pretty good.

I have noticed that Ruger take-off stocks sell pretty well on evilbay, so buying a complete rifle is not a waste, just sell off the stock and forend you don't need, or keep them as spares.

I have been entertaining that idea as well, just hoped to buy a stainless action without the hassle of parting out the "unwantable".

I bought a 7MM RM barreled action and one buddy bought a .300 Win Mag barreled action and another buddy also bought one but I can't remember the caliber. We got them new, in the box in 1976. All three had the Victory Stamping. We bought them from a gunshop in Kalispell. It may have been the Ski Haus or Hahn's but I believe there was also another shop there at the time. My receipt is just a cash receipt with no business name on it.
Let us know how you do.

I did just that, Bought a new rifle sold the stock set, and then had Ed Shulin rough out a stock set for me, on the Bastonge I sent him. My stock guy is going to fit and finish teh stocks, for my 7mm Dakota #1. The octagon barrel work was done by Charlie Young in Northern California and from what I see so far I could not be happier. ML
My biggest fear is when I die my wife sells all my gear for what I said I paid for it.
