This year is first time turkey hunting, tomorrow morning season starts. I have been told that turkey can only be found near water roosting up the trees near creeks & rivers. How far from water will the wander. Did not have time to scout before season started, so I hope to get fortunate & see one . Have calls, blinds, and good ammo. Thanks for any help.. _________________

In my limited experience, I've seen the turks quite a ways from water during the day foraging for frost-killed grasshopppers and currants. - No acorns in western Nebr. What has worked for me is to go out late in the day and get out the spotting scope to try and see them flying into a tree to roost for the night. Bright and REAL early the next am, be in the vicinity with call and deeks. Again, I'm no expert, but I believe that earlier is better.
As with yourself, I had no experience, but I lucked onto a senile turk the first time I went out. Even if you don't shoot one, it's a hoot!! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> SW

Back from Turkey hunting. did not hear one so we scouted the rest of the morning since we have not done that yet. found big turkey tracks by the river bed. will go there next time. So we chased snakes the rest of the morning. Roger picked up a nice black racer (he let it go). Here is a pic.

Asia 'back in the day'! Be persistent! There's gotta be a lurkey turkin' around out there somewhere! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> SW
