After much scrimping and scraping, and begging and such I finally got some money together from my parents, for my early birthday. (Real is Dec.3 I'll be 21). My new friend and one of yours Rick found a sight for me. It's in the mail, and on it's way here. I'll tell you what I'll be the one blasting the postal service if they screw this one up.

I got my Tru-Oil stock refinishing kit in the mail, and my uncle is going to strip and hot salt blue my trigger guard since it looks pretty bad.

I am still looking for a #5-56 thread screw if anyone has one it is used on the sight to attach it to the reciever. If not the smith I talked to offered to tap it to a 6-48 to maintain the one big, one small screw look.

Heres the sight

I'll post some new pictures in a new post when she's all cleaned up. If anyone has the screw let me know

Thanks
Andrew

That is the correct original sight for the 19NRA and it is perfectly satisfactory for plinking and informal target shooting. However in the 1920s and 1930s the sight manufacturers made upmarket sights for that rifle which screw to the holes on top of the receiver. These show up from time to time on ebay. There was a Lyman 48, a Marble Goss, and a Vaver dial micrometer. These are far superior to the original sight you have and if you are interested you can watch out for them on ebay - there is comparatively little demand for them and they usually sell in the $40-60 range.

Thanks very much. If I find one and have the money I may pick it up. As I said earlier in this post, I am looking to go full original on this rifle. I'm trying to find a period original, or ner "copy" sling to go with it. the leather slings at wal mart looked too fake and crappy

Does anyone have bolt dissassembly instructions or pictures. I put a few spent cases through the chamber, and the firing pin is not indenting the cases in any way. I heard it's a "fun" one to get apart, but it is dooable

Thanks

Does the firing pin stick out from the bolt face? I have had several of the bolts apart, you are right, they are not a lot of fun to take apart. You might try a bit of WD40 first to see if the firing pin is bound up.It should move freely on the under side of the bolt.

yeah, I soaked it in liquid wrench for a few minutes then used a high pressure brake cleaner to try and blast it all out. Still too weak. the pin doesnt have any binding or scraping marks on it. It just seems like the spring doesn't have enough "umph"

You might also see if the firing pin sear is dragging on the trigger sear area when it fires.

Wes, are they for a 19-33 or a 1919? Or did they use the same?

It's no biggy, I actually like reading the old threads, reminds of the good ole days here.

You'll have to wait for Rick99 to show up for a date on your gun. I've got lots of dating info but nothing on the NRA's.

Shoud be a first year production , 1919. Savage was geared up and going strong after the war so production was very hight in 1919.

Savage...never say "never".

Joe, they are the 1919/23 model dated and/or early patent dates. I have a 33 with a newer mag. I'm off to a show tomorrow and will try to get a couple pics up next week sometime. I have another chemo session Tuesday and probably will forget.
