Beautiful buck.. maybe a pre-WWII 99R? Would fit the guy's outfit better.

Don't know the book though.

Hi, thats from "The Art of Deer and Bear Hunting" by Fred
Goodwin and Stanley Hawbaker. Its a 21 page brochure or handout from Hawbaker, who sold animal scents.

Somewhere I have a book that has the story of that buck and how Fred got him, but I can't find it, or rather I can't remember the title of the book. If I come up with it, I'll let you know.

When it comes to choosing friends....I'm at an age where I'd rather have 4 quarters than 100 pennies.

Hey DGF:

Last I heard, is alive, 100th B'day last Nov. In a wheelchair now, may be getting around in a walker too. That 99 is an R, pre-WWII, in .300 Sav. cal. He told me he used 150grn bullets which put deer down faster than many of the other cals or guns he had hunted with. But he liked trying out new/dif models/cals... ... 99 LL ... Sounds likes me...

Fred has lived with his sister-in-law,has since his brother died at
very young age. He was a bachelor who earned a lot of respect,
caring for his brother's family. Now they care for him.

Thanks for the correction.Wasn't quite sure if sister or inlaw.Nice people;I'VE been up there 3 times, but not in the last 10 yrs.I always remember, when you first walk in the back room on the left would be a rack of winny 94 carbines, probably 50-60 lying side by side.

Those of you interested in reading about Fred Goodwin's life and hunting stories need to get the Nov/Dec 2008 and Spring 2009 issues of "North American Whitetail" magazine. Editor Duncan Dobie penned a 2-part story on Fred based on live interviews with him. Really cool story and awesome pictures.
