I have been invited to go deer hunting in the Cut Bank area of north central Montana next fall. Anyone have any experience there? If so I would appreciate any thoughts on the area. Thanks, Al

All I know of Cut bank, MT is stopping for fuel on the way north and dang near being blown down the highway.

Doubt that helps you much other than considering wind drift.

I drank enough beer there once, that I just don't remember the exact name...

Only been there once on the way from Kalispell to Great Falls. I remember seeing it many times listed as the coldest spot in the US on some days.
From the area West of there I'd think it would be good hunting and I think I would also carry plenty of gun.
Looks like prime Bear country

I grew up about 30 miles south of Cut Bank. You'll find some very nice mulies in the coulees, and if your near the river bottoms there are some decent whiteys although they are pretty rare. Mostly open country so if you have a chance to spot some out earlier then you'll increase your chances for good bucks. Rut usually runs fairly late in the season usually toward the end of Nov. so if you can get there then, it be helpful as well. Gotta run now but will be back later.

Mike,

Growing up 30 miles south of Cut Bank would put you pretty close to where the "Letterman" buck was killed. This buck (a mule deer typical) is the largest ever killed in Montana. It scores a bit over 207 B&C points but will not be listed in the books because it was poached! There must be a pretty good gene-pool in this part of Montana!

This buck was on display at Sportman's Warehouse in Billings the last time I was up there. It is VERY impressive!

A lot of this question depends on where to from Cutbank. I traveled to CB for 15 years and there is a lot of the country that I'd go to hunt yotes but not deer in a serious manner.

But, there are some places that it can be pretty darn good.

As for the Letterman buck, it's an impressive buck no doubt but the country it came from is quite a stretch from what is in and around CB. Totally different deal no doubt. The front does and can have some very good hunting on it make no doubt, especially if you can draw the tag for the one area.
