I found out when one unexpectedly runs between you and a fast moving car, then changes directions and comes at you, there is little time to get away if it releases its stuff. This is awful..can't get the smell off. It wasn't a direct hit, but from about 6 feet I think it got the back of my leg. Ugh

OUCH! Tomato juice is your friend . Never had to use it on myself, but it worked on a dog I had who couldn't figure out she shouldn't do things that hurt more than once. Dennis

My father used to "deskunk" a lot of skunks and one would get him occasionally. He used tomato juice or fresh tomatoes. I remember one night about 55 years ago when my mother was fixing salad for supper. He came in smelling like skunk and rubbed the tomatoes through is hair. Descented him too!

A friend of mine carries her skunk kit with her when she is out with her dogs. It is hydrogen peroxide (just the little plain brown bottle)and baking soda to make paste, rub it on and let it set a few minutes, rinse with water and then a douche. Works on dogs not sure about people!

1 quart of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide - the usual drug store stuff. 1/2 cup of baking soda 2 teaspoons of liquid dish soap
The hydrogen peroxide breaks down the proteins that cause the smell. The soda is a general deodorizer. The dish soap helps dissolve the oils in skunk spray.
Use the solution immediately after mixing and don't store it. The hydrogen peroxide doesn't last.
The mix might be tough on colored fabrics, so test a small area first.

the peroxide mix sounds safe enough to try on my leg if the tomato doesnt do the trick. Not sure what I'll do about my shoes though, they're not exactly washable.

Many years ago the local veterinarian advised me to use smashed up charcoal briquettes and water, to make a paste. The paste was applied to the offended (usually the bowsers). It's a mess, but helped. I think I'd try the tomato stuff first though. Doritos, they have tomato in 'em. What you don't apply you can munch on.

We have always used the shampoos that are designed to get the chlorine out of your hair after swimming. You can find them at most swimming suit stores. Or online for those of you in less fortunate areas of the country. We had a rottie that really hated skunks, and would kill any of them that came onto our property. Some years we would have to buy a half dozen bottles of the stuff a summer. It works, and is less messy than tomato juice. It is also safe on clothing.

i live on a farm and my dogs get sprayed several times a year. use the mixture jog mentioned. i've used that mixture for at least 10 years and it gets the smell off immediately (otherwise the wife wouldn't let the dogs back into our home).

JOG's method really works. GH and my daughter were out for a walk one night with our golden and GH told Bud to get the kitty at the same time as my daughter turned a light on to it. He then yelled, "Don't do it!" Too late, the 3 of them came home wearing the wonderful aroma. I used JOG's suggestion that I had gotten from our vet and it worked pretty good on all three of em. Of course all their clothes went out to the barn for a lonnnnnnng time.
