Avagadro: Yes, I completely understand the economics of the situation...I flinch when someone says I have to pay$1200-$2000 for a rifle scope....
The guy who does not have so much to spend is absolutely in clover today;for under $1000(way under if he buys used, always a good idea)he can pick up a RemRuChester in 30/06,and a Leup(Burris,Conquest,Sightron, etc) and hunt the entire damn continent, successfully, for about anything....
I would gladly take off tomorrow armed with a 30/06(or any other suitable cartridge) and a 4X Leup, and feel pretty comfy that the game does not stand a chance(I would insist on a great binocular)...I have them technologically out-matched from every single perspective....from there,my hunting and shooting ability has a lot more to do with my success than incremental discernments in optical quality, large variables, light gathering, etc, and any of the other things we like to obsess over...
This is what beginners fail to realize...Gear may be fun,and we can always want better, bigger, more refined,etc....but you cannot buy "skill" in hunting and shooting,it must be earned;and gear ,no matter how refined, does not bring success without skill.

Still a lot to be learned on here.Best solution to most "optics problems' is to go buy a bunch of scopes or binoculars, shoot, hunt, and use them...and come to your own conclusions about what works best for YOU,and stop worrying about what any one else thinks. Agree 100%. I for one appreciate it when someone refutes misinformation. Opinions are one thing, lies and misinformation need to be corrected no matter who the author is. I agree whole heartedly..
I got banned on another web site for a debate that happened on this site. That's a first

Bob, Well put as usual. I was once shown by a Chinese table tennis player and at one time one of the best in the world that the back of a scrub brush was all the equipment he needed to beat any of us with the best paddles. It's not what a guys has it's what he is capable of doing with what he has. The 30 -06 and 4X Leupold example. FWIW: "E"'s posts (since that is the topic of this thread) don't bother me. This forum is full of good info and for the most part a joy to read that's why I hang out here and try to maintain a good perspective. I can argue with my wife, my sister, or my brother any time.

I suspect that physical conditioning is one huge, although often overlooked factor in hunting sucess, probably because it can't be packaged and sold.

I (and several of my friends) quit the Campfire about a year ago because of Rick Bin's unwillingness to quiet people that have nothing to offer but aggravation and arguments. e.g. Emericus.
Free speech is one thing but an annoying troll that is allowed to pester people for the sake of making them angry for years on end has no place in a forum where gentlemen gather for intelligent discourse and the sharing of ideas and experiences.
This is Rick's forum and he can do what he wants with it but IMO it's a shame that he allows trolls to ruin the experience for sincere people.
Once again... I'm out of here...
