I just saw a 99F with a rotary mount that allowed the scope to be rotated to the side of the receiver so the iron sights could be used. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif" alt="" /> It had a bearcub scope mounted. Anybody familiar with this set up. I'm curious about whether the zero is affected much. How much would it raise the value of the rifle?

DanHar, I think you mean "pivot" mount, as "rotary" in 99 speak usually refers to the cartridge feed mechanism.
I have many of my postwar 99Fs set up with Weaver 2pc pivot mounts & rings. I have never had a problem with changing zero (point of impact) on any of them. There are also pivot mounts that are attached to the left side of the receiver and thread into non factory drilled/tapped holes, but I have no experience with them. Most of my scopes are early Weaver, or Leupolds, but I do own 2 Bear Cub 4x made by KILLGROMEN (i may have that wrong as I am far away from home as I write this). They seem to be well made, but I don't know much about them.
One warning about the Weaver pivot bases is, since they "click' into a detent position under spring steel tension for scope use, it is possible during travel, unpacking or handling of the rifle, that the scope could be knocked out of this detent. You'll notice this as soon as you shoulder your rifle, as the crosshairs of the scope will be tilted. You just don't want to find out when your scoping an animal. I don't want to scare you away from this mount set up, as it has only happened to me once in over 4 decades afield (and i'm rough on my hunting rifles), I just want you to know it is possible. I hope this helps. -TomT

The pivot mounts work fine and return to zero consstently. I don't see them adding a lot of value to a gun as they are pretty common as is the Bear Cub too.

Pachmayr made a side mount tip off for the 99. To mount it to the receiver requires using non factory holes. It does bugger up the gun a bit but it works slick. I have one on an EG with a weaver K2.5 and not only does it tip over and back but you can remove the scope and its attachment from the mount. Checking it with a bore sighter before and after hasn't caused any significant change.

The mounts work fine... Tighten the mount with a screwdriver
so that it is locked in position. The problem arises with the 1955 scope that does not handle bright light so well.
I wanted to be original, but in hindsight I would stick to the
"knock off mounts", rendering them immovable with said screwdriver, and mount good modern scope... Or better still,
take everything off, and experience the greatest handling
deer rifle ever!!!

In addition to the Pachmayr sidemount that required making extra holes in the receiver there is a Pachmayr topmount that uses the factory holes.
