It was interesting to read Wayne La Pierre's Column "Standing Guard" in the February 04, American Rifleman and American Hunter wherein he rails against our loss of First Amendment freedom of speech rights because of the McCain-Feingold "Bipartisan Campaign Reform Act", blaming Congress and the Supreme Court, a sample: "As Americans learn what Congress and the majority on the Supreme Court have taken from them, their anger will increase." and "And we will be using our Political Action Committee, the NRA-Political Victory Fund, to hit directly at the politicians who are working to destroy the Bill of Rights."

Hmmmm, amazingly, he never mentions that probably just the threat of a veto by Bush or a real veto would have killed the McCain-Feingold bill. As a matter of fact he never mentions Bush's name or the obvious fact that he signed it into law when he could have vetoed it.

Of course, he did say "craven politicians" but that is not very specific

I wonder if Bush is included in the quote included in the editorial:

"Columnist Cal Thomas, in analyzing the grave harm this decision has done to the First Amendment, wrote, 'Like legislation designed to control guns rather than the people who use guns illegallly, money cannot corrupt politicians. Politicians corrupt themselves.'"

End quoted text:

No doubt.

No doubt Bush caved to "bipartisan" (meaning that A-hole McCain joined with the Demos and the NewYork Times) pressure--assuming that the Supremes would bail him out by noticing the obvious First Amendment violations contained in the act. The the Supremes fooled everybody by OKing this travesty---and then it backfired on its demo sponsors since they are the ones who depend on soft money from fat cats. And now we have Soros and others usng vehicles outside the party apparatus to try to do what they did before through the DNC.
Not a proud moment for W, but if he'd vetoed it all you'd have heard in the media for the last two years would have been attacks on Bush and "crooked" Republican fund raising.(Instead, all you hear is lies about the economy and the war)

Not a great day for America when Bush caved on this one. I believe he did a little political math and decided the "Incumbent Protection Act" would hurt Democrats and help Republicans during the wait for the SCOTUS to swat it out of the park. It was a craven and cynical decision and it needs to be reversed.

BTW, none of the Dems running for the nomination would have vetoed it either.

BINGO!!! Political Correctness it is.The NRA has carried water for Republicans in general for far too long. They should get back to rating politicians on our one single issue regardless of party affiliation. Texas Republicans have targeted one of our few conservative democrats in Washington,Charlie Stenholm.Charlie could do more for us as a democrat than any 3 Republicans they get elected thru their gerrymandering. The Republicans have proved that when they get the majority, they trade away core conservative issues for pocketbook issues. And it ain't the ordinary guys pocketbook they are fattening.

Gene, well, I guess you're right--Bush hasn't helped out the ordinary guys, since the number of people who pay any significant amount of income tax is now such a small portion of the population that I guess we qualify as extraordinary. I guess you'd have to qualify it and say he's only helped out people who actually pay federal income tax--and he has helped out every mother's son of them.
As to the nearly 50% (and growing) portion of the population that don't pay any federal income tax at all, you're right. Bush is a real meanie about that--Daschle and the boys wanted to give a rebate to the non-taxpayers and call it a tax cut. That is sort of the definition of a liberal democrat to me.

I agree that it is time for the NRA to call a pointed iron digging tool a pointed iron digging tool.

Just remember Bush isn't for our gun rights, he's just not as much against us as many other politicians. Bush has said that he supports extending the assualt weapons ban. He just hasn't done anything to convince the House to take action. Maybe he is just trying to ride the fence, but that is the best we can hope for from him.

Yep,I got a big tax refund.I'd rather the gov't keep it and I keep my guns.It all depends on which track you're on;politics, pocketbook,or principle. They always run in different directions and a man needs to figure where he wants to wind up.

gene--last time I checked, you got your money AND your guns. If I had to trade in my arsenal to get my tax cut, I'd be headed for Idaho to join the militia
