For the first time ever there was a limited draw management hunt of the freerange Wood Bison herd in Northwestern Alberta. 6500 applicants for about 200 tags, available to residents only. Here is a pic of one a guy took. North America's largest land mammal. http://www.outdoorsmenforum.ca/showthread.php?p=256002&posted=1#post256002

Are they bigger than an Alaska/Yukon moose? Just asking, as I have no idea. My partner and I had to put a rogue bull down about 20 years ago. Guy locally had a buffalo ranch and one of his best breed bulls went loco. It took 10-180 gr bullets out a 308 through the engine room to put that monster on the deck.
Partner was the trigger man, and I was questioning his placement, but the owner when he skinned it out said that all the bullets were vital organ hits. At the time we were using the FN-FAL C1A1 as our combat rifle.

That is nice! They sure are a big critter. Maybe next year if this carries on.
FN C1A1, now that was a rifle!!! Only thing more fun was the C2.

IIRC thats the only genetically stable herd of wood bison in North America....all other herds are to small to prevent decline due to inbreeding.......

I love hunting when you can stick your rifle in the snow like that.
A buddy of mine runs about 400 head of bison & when a few bulls decide on going..they're gone. I'd imagine a big bull could break out of a bank vault if he had a mind to.

Looks like a dream hunt. Except for the -30 and half ton of meat to deal with!
Thanks for posting.

The buff that I was talking about was real loco -- running through fences, attacking cars and trucks. I'm guessing that if it hadn't been off its nut, the 308 would have done the trick. Wouldn't have minded having a 45-70 on steroids, or even my 405 Win, but we used what we were issued -- we kinda had to. And my partner, though not a tack driver, is a pretty cool head with a rifle or a handgun.

Where's the best spot to shoot a buffalo? Right next to a front end loader- YOu can add "near a road" to that sentiment as far as I'm concerned as well.
