This is an excerpt from an article in Time, March 2, 1998.

"Why We Didn't Remove Saddam"

by George Bush Sr. and Brent Scowcroft

...... Going in and occupying Iraq, thus unilaterally exceeding the U.N.'s mandate, would have destroyed the precedent of international response to aggression we hoped to establish. Had we gone the invasion route, the U.S. could conceivably still be an occupying power in a bitterly hostile land. It would have been a dramatically different--and perhaps barren--outcome.

End quoted text:

Hmmmm......I always thought that allowing Saddam to remain was the biggest screw up that Bush made, (policy wise, not counting "read my lips" which, coupled with one of the worst campaigns in modern history probably cost him the election and gave us 8 years of Clinton) but maybe his analysis was better than I thought. I never forgave him for letting the Kurds be slaughtered in the desert when we had promised them our support. Like father, like son.

That's not a fair comparison. I wish little Georgie was half the man his father was.

Ol'Ralph needed 1000 signatures to get on the ballot in Oregon. He only picked up about 750. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> At least Ross Perot knew when to pack it in.

"...Like father, like son..."

Flies, first you get mad at GHW for NOT going in, then you get mad at GW for GOING in - then you say this. It's beginning to look like you're not really sure WHY you're mad. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

Ok, Inspector, I got you down in the "Bush is a Moron" column. I had thought you were in the "Bush is an Evil Genius, Master of a Thousand Conspiracies" group. It's confusing, since so many Bush-Haters are in both groups simultaneously. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif" alt="" /> Glad you've staked out a firm position on this one. (Sounds like you're pretty convinced, too.)

If you want to get a dissenting view, and can get to a TV, you might want to check out Condi Rice on C-span, where she just left some idiot Demo Congresswoman (redundant, I know) gutted and flopping on the hearing room floor. Say what you want, that woman got a double share of brains and cujones.

The demos are scared motherless that she WILL run for elective office---like Watts, an articulate conservative black is their worst nightmare. That is the reason the demo/libmedia slimers are on her now like white on Rice. By the way, did you notice the buried announcement that the committee will have that liar Clarke back to discuss the major discrepancies between his testimony and the written document the Clintonistas actually delivered to the Bush team. Bet you the media won't be covering that like they did the Bush-bashing book-selling performance.

Bet you are right Steve! As you know, I am not all that enamored with all the GW has done, but the libby alternative churns my stomach! We need to find some true representitives of the people before this country is totaly in the [bleep]. And that is the truth, Pfftttttt!

I guess I wasn't clear. I think Bush I made a mistake by not continuing on, but the politics of the time probably caused him to stop. I wasn't mad at him for that, but rather for breaking his word and that of the United States to the Kurds when he promised them support against Saddam and didn't deliver. Like father, like son referred to the fact that they both lied and got serious numbers of people killed because of it. Is that clear enough?

You are claiming that Jr. allowed Kurds to be slaughtered?

That's news to me!

Actually, if his father had half the balls his son does, we wouldn't be in this mess to begin with. End of story.

"Like father, like son referred to the fact that they both lied..."

So, I'm sittin' here, tryin' to wrap my brain around your aparrent premise that over the span of two or more years, and with changes in the world condition and different resolutions from the UN (who - in spite of the fact that they are a bad joke - our government tries to act more-or-less in co-operation with)..........a person cannot change his mind according to the current reality without it constituting a lie.

You and I may disagree with any politician on many points, but show me where GW said "I will never..." in this case.

Some parents (if they have a brain) avoid making far-reaching promises to their kids. "We'll see" is a common phrase around here. This is exactly why. Things change. This is why politicians often avoid saying words like "always" and "never". The difference is that SOME politicos DO acknowledge certain absolutes while others gauge the wind over EVERYTHING.

Guess who falls on either side of THAT equation....
