RE: Bases for my Winchester '94AE XTR Big Bore
I am having a VERY hard time finding the appropriate bases/rings for my 356 Winchester! Does anyone have a clue where I can find some? The mounting screws on my rifle run perpendicular to the receiver and barrel on the rear AND front of the receiver. All the mounts that I have seen have been for screw holes that run "one in front of the other" down the receiver.
Thanks for any help!

Hi Clay,
Yeah, I have the same problem. Weaver make inline mounts #94 front and #95 rear, but you have to drill and tap the receiver ring for the inline mount. The rear mount is not compatible with the radial front and just about impossible to modify.
Original front mounts are available from Numrich Arms, but not the matching rear. A friend of mine ordered some from Winchester at Christmas time but so far has received nothing.
I hope someone has an answer for this, or I may be stuck having the correct rear mount machined at great expense.

Just checked my 356 Model 94AE. I have a one piece base two screws in rear and one in front.....don't see or remember what brand. Check the Midway master catalog and you should get a part # or call customer service. I use the 200 gr. RN Rem. Corelocks bought in quanity when they were .13 each....afish4570

Thanks afish, but those don't work. I have two screws in from and they are not in line with one another they're on either side of the receiver.
Looks like my only other sight will have to be a ghostring!

Clay,
I have a set of "Weaver Style" mounts on my 307 that has the two holes in the back that are side by side and have the number 95 on it and the front mount has the two holes in a line and has the number 94 stamped on it. There aren't any other markings so I don't know for sure if Weaver made them or not.

Here are a couple of pictures of my receiver, showing where the mounting screws are. The rear is the obvious placement, but the front is what is giving me fits!! Both of the front screws are tapped radially and not flat like the rear ones. Clay

Mine has a 403 on the front and is drilled front to back. Were some of these drilled like this on purpose or is it a factory defect? Can it be drilled to accept a normal mount?

The early AE's had the front receiver ring D/T'd radially, or side-to-side, the same as the rear rails - but was soon changed to an inline front base D/T'ing.
AFAIK, Winchester Parts Dept still has the bases, and is the only source, due to the small demand.

Clay I know exactly what you're talking about! I bought a 94 356 Win years ago with the "Cheekpiece" in the buttstock. I went through hell but finally got them directly through Winchester. Both front and rear weaver style bases for .......$35.00!!!! OUCH!!!! Maybe gun parts corp in West Hurley NY might have then , if not then sorry........

Kind of strange that me and you have the same question being asked. Mine's in general lever actions though.
