I found a real nice Savage 99 for sale for $525 on Saturday. The gun shows some use but has not been drill and tapped, the tang is not cracked the stock in excelent condition real nice wood. The only flaw that I could find is that someone mounted a compas dead center on the top of the stock about an inch from the end of the metal but plate,it is a real profesional job. Considering the compass is 525 reasonable price for the 99

Geez, I didn't know Les was selling his guns?

What model is it? What caliber is it? Either way I think $525 is to high with the compass in it but thats just my .02.

I know...most here frown on compasses in a 99 stock, & I wouldn't
look for one to buy now. The only one I have is on a 358 which
is in otherwise great shape. Each time I see it, I smile & those
smiles are worth lots more than I've got invested in the gun.

caliber? Model? Pictures? Hard to say but its probably about what the gun would bring on the internet market...

Tom. The compass is a tribute to old farts. My granddad...born 1904...liked a butt pad...a sling swivel install...and a compass. Key elements. Check out my compass post...that I just got back on the map here. Excellent installation goes a long ways...and...you kinda know a general North South alignment...not to be confused withthe Mason-Dixon Line.

525 with a compass in the...uhhh..butt. I'm a lot slower than the general population here. Caliber matters to me. So...that part depends.

525...compass? Who the hell cares? Character. It's 525 without a compass...it's 525 with a compass. Small potatoes. Like the caliber...bore...wood? ...buy it. (I am an ass about sling swivels, drill and tap, buttpads...don't buy those)

Now...if you're wondering about a $1700 gun with a compass...different story... Sheez... Let that one go...

It is a 300 Savage serial # 56XXXX it appears to be in great shape bluing is at least 90 percent and the stock and forarm has very few marks most of which appear to be from general usage and handling. It maybe an EG other than a compass was mounted in the stock there are no other marks. The compas threw me as far as value. It is on consignment.

Bore?

No sling swivels?
No butt pad?

Buy it. Someone thinks it's a $400 gun? So what? Delta is $125... Sheez, Work some over time or don't go out to eat for 3 weeks...

If you like it...buy it. (check the bore)

Again:

You have to carry your rifle...everywhere you go. Forever. Why carry a compass in your pocket...when you are carring your rifle already?

Did you just get back from happy hour? You have posted the same line now on 3-4 posts. At least you seem happy tonight. Lets talk about compasses.

99EG in 300 Savage for $525.. can get a pretty decent one for that price off the internet. Not locally, where they sell rats for $600+, but there's plenty out there.

If you like it and want to hunt with it, buy it. $100 won't kill ya if it makes you happy. If you're looking for a good one to round out your gun collection, wait and watch. Jmho..

Like to shoot...I just thought it was funny as hell! And so many threads going at once that touched on Compasses...I was laughing away!

Agree with Calhoun totally. Collecting...save up a couple of thousand and take your time. Be picky...perfect is required. Might take 10 years or so...

Shooting...$500-550...you like it..good bore...good hunting rifle...go with it. A compass in the stock is not going to make or break a $525 throw down.

Well I picked her up last night an 99 EG. Can someone help with her age Serial # 508XXX. Any idea on date of manfacuter
Bore: excellent no rust nice and bright
No sling swivels.
Orginal metal but plate screws show not indication of ever being removed.
No cracks in stock couple of small dings that can be steamed out, gun shop wounds.
Two issues: 1. small dime size compass in stock
2. she needs a good cleaning you can see oil and dirt in cindler area. That I can take care of in the next couple of day.
Thanks for answering questions and the help in the past. She will make a great hunter.

I don't have my book handy, but if memory serves me correctly, that will be a post-war model, probably '48 give or take a few years. Someone who has the book can give you the year of manufacture for certain.

What's the caliber?

With your description, you got a fair deal on it. I don't see many bargains on 99's down here, and the fact you had the chance to inspect in person rather than seeing only photos on the 'net means a lot. The prices on 99's are not going down, so enjoy!

Sorry for being slow getting back to you, Tom.

Anyway, I'm thinking that hatari hit it on the head and it is a 1948 rifle. Sounds like a great rifle, barring that compass thingie. grin
