I just bailed out my first post mil savage 99 that I had on layaway. Wanted fill a void in my collection. Gun is a model F in 308 and would say its in 95% condition. However it has sling swivels which are professionally installed. Also fitted with a lyman 57SB reciever sight. Serial is #11844xx. Lever boss code is V which I believe is 1968. I can't figure out is that it has a aluminum butt plate and Murray states this started in 1970. Another thing is that its not marked 99F on the right hand side of brl. just the 99M on the left frame. The best part is I paid $400. No extra charge for the gold trigger and inpressed checkering.

the F was not the only gun that had the boss in the barrel at the rear sight...

99M was usually found on the "DL" which had the Monte Carlo stock, and aluminum butt plate. I have heard that there were some F's that only said 99M, but I have no proof of this.
Sounds like a decent hunting rifle.

All said, the Savage 99 is a genius of a rifle. Although no longer produced, it remains highly revered, as it was the foundation from which Arthur Savage built one of America's great gun companies. >> (Jon Y. Wolfe) <<

I've seen a 99F stamped 99M instead of F. They used the same barrels, both of them had the sight boss on them so mixing up a DL barrel and putting it on an F would be no biggy.

On examining this rifle and comparing it to other photos and checking with Murray's book I feel I have a 99 DL without the monte carlo stock. Gun has the same checkering pattern and identical non detachable swivels. The lever base code is 6V has a steel rotary mag. Gun is close to new condition and not messed with.

I'd call it an F with studs.
What made the DL a DL was the Monte Carlo stock, if it ain't got it then it's an F.
The checkering pattern on the two guns were identical that year.

It looks great on the gun and I'm going to leave it on. I have not fired the gun yet , waiting for some good weather.
