Have any of you guys ever used the old Leupold Model 3 scope mounts? The were made in the early 1960s. They are two piece bases with the FRONT base adjustable for windage. They require the use of Model 3 rings. They are machined steel, beautifully made, and very light. They didn't make them for too many years and they are not easy to find.

Here's a few pictures of a rifle I just set up with some. It's a 1950s 99F in .300. I put an old Leupold M8 3X scope on it. The scope has a German 3 post reticle; it's a great scope in the woods or in low light.

Pretty slick. Are lower rings available? Scope looks a little high for my taste.

I've never seen different height rings. All of them I've ever had are this height. They are higher than i would normally like for a straight tube scope like the 3X, but they line up pretty well with my eye.

I really like the unobstructed loading gate with the two piece mounts. It is just a little easier, not a speed thing since most of my hunting is done on foot. Load up, walk and stalk!

Yeah I never understood the arguement that ppl have issues loading with the redfield mounts... does 30 extra seconds really matter before you walk into the woods...my magaizine is loaded well before hunting hours start and its has no effect on cycling...

I like the look of these leupold mounts...first I have ever seen of these... though it does look a little high...

That 3x Leupold is very desirable to the crowd that likes them. I had one that I sold to a guy in AK for $175. I thought the guy was going to start sending me Christmas cards.

They put them on DG rifles I guess...

all 99Fs were drilled at the factory...see how the words "Savage model 99" are on the left side of the front receiver ring... that means they were factory drilled and tapped ... (with only a few very rare exceptions)

How many times a day do you load/unload? I used to partcipate in a lot of drives for deer and bear and had to unload the rifle before jumping in the truck to head to the next patch of woods. Then loading up again with cold hands or wearing gloves and being in a hurry makes it likely that you'll drop at least one shell in the snow.

Plus, you can get a better carry grip by sliding your thumb between the scope and the top of the action.

Solid frame or TD?

seems to be solid & yes it looks like your picture at least as far as the forearm goes & checkering, mine has tang site however
the T on the receiver can only be seen after the forearm is removed. It looks like it wasn't molded into the receiver but rather stamped.I thought it was a "T" for this reason but then someone said that stamped "T" didn't make it a model T,thats why I have been confused, but sometimes it doesnt take much lately

Bruce, it depends on the year of the rifle.. from the 20's through the 40's most models had the stamp. Every one of my 99T's has a T stamp. But there are exceptions, also. 99R/99RS weren't stamped with an R or RS for some reason.

Now, Rod, I've got a couple of 99T's that I'd love to put some of those Redfield bases and rings on. Love the vintage look to them. Just never seen a set for sale.

Have not seen a set of those in many years...I have a 3X Leupold on my 99EG in a set of Leupold std. rings and bases with the windage on the rear of the one piece base. They mount the scope much lower than the old set that you have...and are available today.

Phil ,

that is a beautiful set up ... a 50's featherweight in 300 is tough to beat ....

I have a couple of ConeTrol mounts on some 99's... if you're looking for a sleek , projectionless scope mount , look no further : click on me .. comes in low , medium and high ..... matte or mirror ..... not to mention a vintage design .

I need my glass a little on the high side ... got a fat face you know grin

an f in 300 is easily beat by a .308, it is nice to get your thumb over the top.
