I am handloading these for a friend's 375 RUM. They shoot really great but we are concerned with on game performance. They might be too soft. He is interested in using these for moose and elk. What do you think?

While nothing surprises me anymore, I'm not sure I'd equate the demise of the 270 RN with the similar demise of the SP version. Hornady does seem to be replacing some of their BG offerings with upgraded, more expensive designs. Forcing their customers to buy their less expensive bullets from other makers - like Sierra- does not seem like a wise decision economically. (I must admit that I was not happy to lose the 270 RN as an option since it - and the 300 RN- were the two bullets that were perfectly suited to a little short action 375 I have. Obviously a 250 A-Frame will work as well or better. However, at 10 bits apiece, they are a bit spendy for targets.) While I don't use the 270 SP as much as the RN version, I hope you are wrong about its termination.

x2, also miss the 270RN, hope we dont loose the SP to some more $$$ offering.

Can you elaborate?

I know that Hornady replaced the standard 270gr SP with the SP-RP version. Maybe that is what he is refering to in his statement. The SP-RP no longer has an exposed lead tip. It is new to the market. I would be shocked to hear Hornady introduce something then drop it shortly there after (that sounds more like Remington).

Learn something occasionally... . Just looked at the Hornady website, and the "old" 270 gr SpirePoint is nowhere to be seen. There is a 270 gr SP-RP, which apparently has a very small exposed lead tip. It does appear to cost more than the old bullet...imagine that.

I won't care so much as long as they don't put a perverted plastic point on it .

what is RP ????????????

Whatever happened to the .375 RN InterBond's? They were dropped right after introduction. Seems re-fining the .375 and up calibers is a yearly thing.

Any other inputs as far as on-game performance goes?

I have never ran them out of a RUM so not sure about the terminal preformance. My experience with interlocks tells me if you run them under 2800 fps, they are an exceptional bullet. If you run them over 2800, and shots tend to be close in range, they can be quite destructive.

Both one-shot kills. One was at very close range, the other at 200+. Can you tell which is which?

The point is, they expand well and hold together from near MV to more than 200 yd.

They look good there for sure. I think my friend's concern is smacking an elk or moose shoulder at 20 yards or so at 375 RUM velocities.
