Maybe the carver left a blemish. It was a Monday morning, and the wife was having her monthly thing....
I'm not seeing added metal on top of the bolt. I see relief engraving.

Jed,

Who engraved it? Who did the carving? Anyone? Anyone?

If I had it....a nice brass compass would really set it off...don't ya think?

Hi Lynn,
Metal work is Tue's.
Wood work from King.

Can't imagine the previous owners of this one to get the urge to take a screwdriver to it. I'd be dammed surprised if they didn't shoot it though.

Jed,
Why do you say that it is Tue? Because of era? Is it stated someplace I haven't read?

Jed, gonna call hogwash on that dent. Personally, my shell casings eject at an angle to the right, slight upwards and to the rear. They don't come anywhere near the wood. And they don't bounce off the stock and smack me in the face.

You sure there isn't another identical line on the other side of the tang?

Rory,
multiple dent's. Open your action slowly with an empty casing. The neck will cuff the wood right there.

Lynn,
That's Tue's work. It's got the look. Tue was SAC's sole engraver until 1927 +/- when he died.

Rory,
I don't think your seeing the marks that I want you to see.
They are miniscule vertical cuts in the varnish. Not the carving work.

Okay, I went and looked and I'll admit that my hunter EG has maybe three times that many dents in a small area in that exact spot. But, the cases don't touch the wood when I do it slow. Or fast. And my EG has been shot hundreds or thousands of times..

So maybe one in a hundred cases do flip around. Though I don't see how that works yet -- from the bolt face to that spot doesn't seem possible without the side of the receiver kicking it outwards.

Gotta go cycle some fired brass through my 99's and see if I don't learn something. grin

My knowledge is vastly overwhelmed only by my ignorance.

Had a manager introduce me to the following learning or awareness levels. I like to think I've reached #3 on 99's.

Four levels of learning:
------------------------
Unconscious Incompetence -- You dont know what you dont know
Conscious Incompetence -- Youre now aware that you dont know it
Conscious competence -- You are aware & learning more about it
Unconscious competence -- You dont have to think about it
