This first one I am told was a mail order house from Montgomery Wards. It was bought and shipped by train to Shaniko, Ore in the late 1800's. Shaniko was then a large town, in fact the wool shipping capitol of the world. At Shaniko iw was loaded on wagons pulled by horse's and taken to the building site. 8 miles to Antelope about 2 1/2 miles is a steep windy down grade. Then another 8 miles past Antelope and 1 1/2 mi up a dirt 4 wd road and then built on site.

This next house I've taken photo's of a lot but never really got one I really liked, till now. Got a heavy first snow this past year and I got there before any snow was disturbed. In fact, you can see it's still snowing. This was the first house built in Antelope and the only building left standing after a range fire destroyed the town in the late 1800's. The owner of the house told me he has paper's showing the house was there in 1865. It's one of Oregon's oldest buildings. 143 winter's and still going.

I haven't found out a lot about the Monger Ranch but my barber was born and raise in Wheeler County near it and remembers people living in it in the 1950's.

I really like the 2nd picture.

Here's a picture of my grandfather's 1st house on his homestead in North Dakota - about 40 miles SE of Sidney, Montana. wink

My grandfather is the fellow in the middle. The others are 2 of his brothers.

Nice pics. Looks as if they were fairly nice homes in their day. Makes you wish they could tell you their stories....

I wish I had really been into photography years ago. There used to be some really nice old log house's where I lived in Montana. On the north side of flathead Lake was a barn that was leaning really bad but for some reason wouldn't fall.

Going to take a road trip to the Sumpter area this spring, supposed to be a lot of them over there.

This one is near Gateway, Ore.

This one is the Moro Ranch near Kent, Ore. Birdie remembers people living there. But she was born in Kent 92 years ago!

Not really a house, but neat nonetheless. Best we could determine it was cold-storage for a nearby cabin.

I don't suppose you have another photo of the whole house? That house is in Nevada, right?

Decided to make a calender of Old houses. Actually Old Buildings. Gonna do it in B/W because I re-did the Monger Ranch that way and couldn't believe I didn't do it years ago.

[Linked Image]

The cover is going to be the old Clarno Grange Hall. It was really melting down when Ray Clarno bought it and restored it. Ray's ancestors origionally had the ferry to cross the John Day river here at the turn of the cenruty. Ray also wanted to re-do the Clarno school but couldn't buy it. They did let him have to old out house though but it fell apart when they tried to move it.

Clarno Grange Hall restored.

Really have to give Ray and his wife Beverly a lot of credit for a great job. Wish more of our history was preserved this way.

Down river aways, just past the Clarno grave yard, is Huck's old place. I'm sure it belonged to someone else before Huck and when I see Huck I'll get some dope on it. But it's in great disrepair and it is rather old and made a really nice photo I think.

Huck's place aka Rolfe Ranch

Animas Forks, old mining town in Colorado. Sorry, only pic I have
of this house, but a pic is on Google Earth. It is in great shape for being 100+ yrs old.
