Hello, I need some help to choose a scope for my rifle between :

- Weaver Classic V9 3-9x38

- Leupold VX-II 3-9x40

- Nikon Buckmasters 3-9x40

- Others ?

I have used the Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 and the VX-III 2.5-8x36 on my Winchester M70FW .270 WIN rifle with complete satisfaction (moved the VX-II to a M88). I also own a Ruger M77 in .270 WIN, that rifle wears an Elite 3200 3-9x40, it has also performed up to expectations. I think any good scope in that size range will work fine for a .270 WIN.

When I decided to buy a new scope for my M70 30-06 I checked the stats for scopes that would fit without extension rings, give me enough eye relief, and would mount so I didn't have to crawl the stock to get close enough to see properly. I found Leupold's FXII 6x36, FXIII 6x42, and VX III 3x9X40 would work. I chose the 3x9. The Zeiss Conquest scopes will work fine too (I later discovered). I ordered my 3x9 from Leupold's custom shop and got a post & duplex reticle installed. I really like my choice.

Yep to ALL of the above. I've used all of those and then some without disappointments. The Leupies are probably as good as any and still modestly priced for what you get. From the advice from above you need to tell the 'fire what kind of hunting you do most, and they'll be happy to tell you their choices for your brand of hunting.

I have to give you some details :

- I live in France in a mountainous area.

- Shooting distances : less than 300 yards.

- Hunted game : deer, chamois, sheep, and sometimes boars.

Jerome, if you hunt in dim light a thicker reticle will help. The older I get (I'm 55) the more I like a thicker reticle for everyday use. The Leupold post & duplex reticle is much like a #4 with the posts thinner than a true #4 but thicker than a standard duplex and the center section thicker than a standard duplex. The heavy duplex is about the same as the post & duplex reticle with the posts thicker and the spaces between the posts wider than the post & duplex. The heavy duplex or post & duplex reticles are not too thick to shoot accurately. You can order a scope from Leupold direct if you have a scope made that is not a standard production item. I ordered a 3x9x40 witha post & duplex reticle from the Leupold custom shop.

The Nikon Buckmaster is a good scope. The Nikon Monarch scopes are worth the extra cost.

IMHO you may be disappointed with the Weaver scope. In my experience they are not as bright and the resolution not as good as the Nikon Buckmaster of Monarch scopes or the Leupold VX2 scopes.

I think you'd be very happy with the Trijicon. Optics are very good and bright,so is the reticle. A Leupold would be my second choice.

So you think Trijicon is better than Leupold ?
I don't know if I can find a Trijicon Dealer in France...

For the Leupold Custom Shop I don't think I can take order from my country.

You're the one that has to pack that 14-17 oz scopes around your mountainous terrain. Got to be something out there in the 12 oz range that will work every bit as well, and 4 oz at the end of the day sometimes equates to almost 4 pounds, depending on your age and condition.

Leupold VX-II in a 3-9x4 will work just fine.

I just noticed weight difference...

Speaking of weight :

- Zeiss Conquest 2.5-8x32 : 13.75 oz
- Trijicon AccuPoint 3-9x40 : 12.8 oz (or 13.4 oz ?)

- Leupold VX-II 3-9x40 : 12.0 oz

Other choices offered by friends : VX-II 2-7x33 (10.5 oz) or VX-III 2.5-8x36 (11.4 oz)...

The weight is the enemy ...

I'm not sure if the Nikon Monarch 2x8 will fit between the scope rings without using an extension ring in the front position.

The VxII is the best scope on your list but it's also the most expensive............547.

And get the LR version.

The Trijicon has better optics, in my opinion, than a VX3 Leupold. The reticle ALWAYS is easy to see, and the weight is very close.

I'm using a Nikon Buckmaster on my model 110 Savage in 270 and I'm very happy with it.I got it from SWFA's bargin list for $149.95 .

I have the amber triangle in my Trijicon 3X9, it took a little getting used to but when you do, it works great. When I buy another I think I'll probably get one with a duplex and illluminated dot in the center.
